Stepping back from the consistent engagement of making work, we set a stage on which the nature of the work can be put into question. Why do we do what we do? How do we do it? What is its purpose? And ultimately, how does it resonate in the world? An intense questioning that moved from language, to image, to context, to philosophy, to spirituality, and back to craft creates the conditions and primes the discourse. The methodology is rediscussed and redeveloped. The goalposts shift as the object of interest takes shape through conversations. Identifying this stage of the work as ‘research’ helps to establish the aim: gaining knowledge.
