When Nike asked me to collaborate on their new Air Max DN my first thought was how do I integrate beauty into sport. To me they seemed to be at odds - sport is raw, aggressive, powerful and makeup instinctively feels artistic, contrived and precious. I could never have imagined how deeply wrong I was. Beauty is paramount to helping the incredible athletes that graced this campaign. It gives them the confidence and prowess that they need to go for gold. Whether it’s a ritualistic manicure before a race, a specific hairstyle that gives them the fierce game face they need or a specific eyeshadow colour to match their gymnastics leotard, makeup is essential to winning. Beauty rituals at their most powerful — I wanted to design shoes that didn’t steal the show, but allowed the beauty and integrity of the athletes to shine though - they are the true stars and what they wear should elevate and amplify.
