SEANA GAVIN
@seanagavin
Seana Gavin is a London based artist, working in the mediums of photography and hand cut collage. Her photographs and collages compliment one another, offering insights into worlds that have been lost as well as those not yet found.
She discovered raves and the free party scene at age 15. During that time she spent long periods of time travelling in her friends mobile homes in convoy with the sound systems across Europe. In a very natural way she documented the environments and friends around her during this time, never intending for the photographs to be seen by a wider audience.
The first time this material was exhibited was in 2019 at her solo show ‘Spiral Baby’ at galeriepcp, Paris. The show included a collection of photographs taken over a decade documenting the free party rave movement in London and across Europe. Including diary entries and ephemera from 1993-2003. The photographs show the build up, aftermath and journeys in between the raves. As well as the characters that defined the scene.
A selection of her photographs were then exhibited at ‘Sweet Harmony; Rave Today, The Saatchi Gallery, 2019. Soon after she published a photography monograph Spiralled with IDEA books in 2020, which was selected as work of the week by Art Review. And is now in it’s 4th edition. In April a selection of this series of work was also exhibited in her solo exhibition ‘Hidden Tracks; A decade of free parties’ at Gallery46 in London.
Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at major art galleries and institutions including The Nobel Prize Museum, Somerset House, Fundacao de Serralves, The Walker Art Gallery, the Wellcome Collection and New York’s The Hole.
She has been featured in publications such as Elephant Magazine, Epoch, Twin, Wonderland, Dazed & Confused, Sleek, Vanity Fair France, and online at The Guardian, Crack Magazine, The FT, NY Times, i-D, The Face, 032c, Frieze and Anothermag.
