You might not be familiar with the late Allee Willis, but you certainly will know some of the music she’s responsible for co-writing. Try Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and “Boogie Wonderland,” the ‘Friends‘ TV show theme “I’ll Be There For You,” Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield’s “What Have I Done to Deserve This?,” or the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance” for starters.

But Willis’ story goes far beyond the music she was responsible for creating. She also built a reputation as an art director, avant garde furniture maker, party host, and collector of what she dubbed “the world’s largest assortment of kitsch-related memorabilia,” as showcased with her online Allee Wills Museum of Kitsch.

With her fascinating story being told in the Alexis Manya Spraic’s documentary THE WORLD ACCORDING TO ALLEE WILLIS out now, we asked writer Mark Blackwell, her longtime friend and collaborator, to reflect on the film and some of his memories with her.
