At @MoMuAntwerp, ‘Masquerade, Make-up & Ensor’ explores the duality of masks, make-up, and identity, where artifice reflects society. The exhibition examines how beauty ideals and self-presentation continue to resonate in contemporary life.

Ensor’s critical gaze opens the show, juxtaposed with contemporary artists like @isywod and @genievefiggis, whose works challenge our discomfort with self-image and beauty’s contradictions. From @patmcgrathreal’s hauntingly delicate make-up for @MaisonMargiela to @Juliendys sculptural hairstyles for @CommedesGarçons, the worlds of fashion and craftsmanship take center stage, merging art with identity play. Photography by Cindy Sherman and @Bruce_Gilden confronts personas both curated and raw, exposing the fragility beneath. Belgian make-up icon @IngeGrognard’s visionary work stands as a vibrant celebration of make-up as a form of artistry.

Running until February 2nd, 2025, Masquerade, Make-up & Ensor invites us to question what lies beneath the surface, where transformation becomes truth and masks tell the most revealing stories.
