“The Street,” an exhibition curated by Peter Doig (
@peterdoig), closes today, December 18, at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. The show takes Balthus’s remarkable 1933 painting “The Street”—generously loaned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York (
@themuseumofmodernart)—as its point of departure.
Here, Doig considers the works on view in the lower level, including Edward Burra’s “Beelzebub” (c. 1937) and Max Beckmann’s “Hölle der Vögel” (“Birds’ Hell,” 1937–38), and the sense of danger and violence that they suggest. Follow the link in our bio to watch a full interview with Doig on “Gagosian Quarterly.”
