We are excited to share some glimpses from Soumya Sankar Bose’s
@soumyasankarbose residency at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Nantes
@iea.nantes, France, where he has been invited as the artistic chair of The Beaux-Arts Nantes Saint-Nazaire, le lieu unique, and the city of Nantes.
Besides continuing his research on thanatology, Bose is also working on his new project, ‘We Need to Talk in Whispers,’ which began in early 2023 in India and traces the intersections between tangible events and subjective emotions to delve into the multifaceted nature of memory and grief. The work also draws from sources like newspaper archives, court verdicts, suicide notes, death announcements, social media posts, and the recollections of those grappling with loss, alongside insights from scholars such as Émile Durkheim and Edwin S. Shneidman, Peter Mayer, Katrina Jaworski, and Kees Van Heeringen.
‘We Need to Talk in Whispers’ attempts to integrate the lived realities of its subjects, personal stories, and fictionalised narratives with social science theory. It continues Bose’s exploration of themes central to his practice: memory, loss, archives, and the fragility of human existence. Through a delicate interplay between the individual and the collective, the real and the imagined, the seen and the felt, the work offers an evocative lens into the psychological, emotional, and social dimensions of life and death.
