@Apollotheater’s Michelle Ebanks, Kamilah Forbes, and Jonelle Procope on being the first institution honoree at the Medallion Ceremony:
“So yes, for 90 years The Apollo has been a crucible of creativity, a shaper of social change, and a catalyst in American life. The Apollo was a pioneer in integration, a champion of Black artistry, and a vital force in the Harlem Renaissance.
Today, we stand on the shoulders of giants committed to carrying their legacy forward. And this honor, we know it’s not just for The Apollo. It is for Harlem. It is for every artist that has graced its stage, and it is for every audience member who has had their say. And, most importantly, it’s for every young person who has a dream set on the future in the arts.
So we are deeply grateful to the Kennedy Center for recognizing The Apollo’s profound impact on American culture, and we are honored to join our fellow Honorees in celebrating the transformative power of the arts. Thank you.”
