A big thank you to all contributing artists, everyone who spread the word and bought a @picturesforpurposeorg print for Palestine and Lebanon. Together we generated an incredible €118.456,- in sales!

As this crisis deepens – with Israel’s latest incursions into the UN-administered buffer zone in the Golan Heights – it demands our continued attention. It also demands political action, and further pressure on our political representatives. Whilst the limitations of a print sale are clear, we remain humbled by your support and what we’ve been able to achieve in two short weeks. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this print sale fundraiser.

Proceeds of our fifth fundraiser were raised for @taawonpalestine Noor programme and @beitelbaraka Forsa programme. These organisations are dedicated to building a better future for children in Palestine and Lebanon.

A special thank you to @carmenatiyah and @carmen.amsterdam for hosting our first event together, @fotolab_amsterdam for printing all Pictures for Purpose prints since our very first edition and of course the Pictures for Purpose team. 🤍🫂

Hitching a Ride, Amman, Jordan, 2018 by Dean Majd

Like many other artists who contributed to @picturesforpurposeorg for Palestine and Lebanon @deanmajd has a strong connection to the affected region.

“This image is from my series “Separation”. Shot in Palestine, Jordan and the occupied territories known as “Israel” in 2018, the series explores occupation, expulsion and memory through the eyes of my family. The image is a snapshot of two boys hanging on the back of a truck as it speeds through the winding roads of Amman. The title refers to how I was hitching rides from my family to travel through Jordan and Palestine.”

Invisible museum by Daria Svertilova from the series ‘Irreversibly Altered’, 2023

A few weeks ago @aperturefnd published ‘A Collective Portrait of Contemporary Ukraine’, an interview by @gregory_volk, who talked to @vladyslavandrievsky @svertilova and George Ivanchenko.

Within their conversation they discussed our exhibition ‘Essential Goods’ and how life and work for Ukrainian artists has changed in the past decade.

Thank you @brendanembser and @gregory_volk for shedding light on these artists’ works and our exhibition, which launched last spring in Kyiv.

Rebekka Deubner experiences photography as a restorative act in her series “Strip”. The playful interventions with her mother’s wardrobe resulted in videos and bright-coloured photograms, currently exhibited at Foto Tallinn.

“After her death, my mother’s clothes became relics of her hollowed-out body. She left traces of wear – odours, stains, darning, holes – across the textiles, marking them with vivid shapes. The series ‘Strip’ revolves around the body, its filial memory and its metamorphoses.

I slip into her skin in every possible way as a means to inhabit her presence.”

Valentin Valette is one of the participating artists at Foto Tallinn, who combines his knowledge from other fields with an artistic practice.

With a background in political science and sociology the visual arts offer a valuable research instrument for him.

‘Ashes of the Arabian’s Pearl’ (2020–2023) examines a period of monarchical transition in the Sultanate of Oman – characterised by an urgent need for economic diversification in the face of declining oil and gas resources. This documentary project emerged from a desire to observe the dynamics of economic development, exploring the prevailing trajectory for the region’s monarchies in the reshaping of public policies to adjust to a world facing deep inequality and climate-change.

The resulting series cultivates a metaphorical conversation between two distinct demographics: entrepreneurial Omani families and skilled artisans mostly coming from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The multidisciplinary project combines a corpus of archives, sound recordings, found objects from abandoned labour camps and over a hundred medium-format photographs.

Install shots at the Pavilion of Culture.

The 1967 modernist landmark is now a curatorial institution at the intersection of contemporary visual art, music and architecture.

With the outbreak of full scale war its programme was suspended, and its building became a depot for humanitarian aid.

In May - for the first time since the full scale invasion - we launched the group show ‘Essential Goods’ at the striking venue, featuring photographic works by a new generation of Ukrainian artists.
