The common thread that unites the realm of a Viking, a wrestler, a tribute, a tech-savvy, and a survivor of an apocalypse lies within
@alexanderludwig. The actor’s talent lies in both portraying characters from different universes as well as being able to imprint a sense of vulnerability and power into each one. When remembering Cato’s ego in The Hunger Games, Bjorn’s heroic figure in Vikings, Ace Spade’s strength in Heels, and Ish’s melancholy in Earth Abides, it’s clear that each being had a deeper, humanizing aspect of themselves that Ludwig exquisitely expressed on screen. He does, and continues to shape his roles with sensitivity, navigating the craft of acting not only with passion but with purpose.
As he steps into his most recent role in the post-apocalyptic series Earth Abides, he explores his most introspective and isolated side to date. We talked to Alexander about how he approaches masculinity in his roles, the challenges of embodying such different characters and scripts, and what makes him proudest of his 23-year-long career.
“You always want to get better, but there’s never really a point where it’s like, ‘Oh, now I can relax.’ I do know that every trial and tribulation I’ve ever faced has led me to this moment. I have enough trust in the universe and in myself to know that things will work out the way they’re supposed to, and I’m just going to keep going. I always told myself when I was a kid, terrified that I wouldn’t be able to provide for myself, let alone a family, and wondering how the hell I could make a living doing this crazy job – I’d rather be 80 years old and jobless than let my 12-year-old self-down. That has carried me a long way, and I still carry it with me every day. ”
