Today is a day I will never forget. After years of sharing my story and advocating on Capitol Hill, the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act has officially passed the U.S Congress. This moment is proof that our voices matter, that speaking out can spark change, and that no child should ever endure the horrors of abuse in silence. I did this for the younger version of myself and the youth who were senselessly taken from us by the Troubled Teen Industry. To the countless survivors who shared their stories, to the families who stood with us, and to the coalition, thank you from the bottom of my heart for standing with me. Yesterday at Capitol Hill, I gave a speech urging the House to pass the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act—a bill that would protect children from the same trauma I endured as a teen in a residential treatment facility. I’ve visited the Capitol several times since beginning on my advocacy journey, but this trip is especially meaningful as I have my son Phoenix by my side. He and my daughter London are a huge part of my motivation in fighting for children’s rights 🥹 I want them to know that their mom is making sure that the world a safer place for every child. 💔✨ The Senate has already passed it. I am so proud to share that my bill The Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act passed the U.S Senate unanimously today!! All 100 Senators stood for protecting children in youth residential treatment facilities and I couldn’t have dreamed of a more powerful moment to be able to impact the system that harmed me. I am still in shock that my lived-experience, among the powerful survivor community, has been able to impact meaningful progress and change for the next generation of survivors. We still need this bill to get passed in the U.S House of Representatives to be signed by President Biden but WE ARE SO CLOSE! I am so grateful for the leadership of @SenSchumer who has supported my initiative from the beginning, and to my bill sponsors @SenJeffMerkley and @JohnCornyn who I have had the honor to get to know personally and who have been the most dedicated, efficient, and collaborative bipartisan lawmakers. I am so lucky to have met you and to have worked with you on this!
