‘Maria’ required Angelina Jolie to look inward as few jobs have, and she’s still working her way through how the experience has impacted her—and what she wants to say about it. “I went very dark for reasons I’d rather not explain, but I didn’t have a lot of light and life within me,” Jolie says of her break from acting. “Your light’s dim. I also just needed to be home more, so I couldn’t commit large periods of time to pieces... Political division is at an all-time high, but Americans seem to agree on one thing: Something needs to be done about the country’s broken health insurance system. The murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson earlier this month has exposed widespread frustration with the for-profit health insurance industry, and physicians are as fed up as their patients. “When doctors try to negotiate, they have to take whatever that carrier gives them,” says Ron Howrigon, a health care consultant who represents doctors in their dealings with insurers. “Obviously, this is a tragic event,” he says of Thompson’s killing. “But one of my first thoughts was, I am kind of surprised this hasn’t happened earlier.” For VF, Katherine Eban spoke to doctors around the country, as well as a UnitedHealth representative, about the issues facing our healthcare system.
