“The First Car” for The New York Times
This past summer, Eve Lyons @lyonse invited me to be a part of her new special project, “Where We Are” a @nytimes series about young people coming of age and the spaces where they create community.
Remy Tumin @remytumin who interviewed my friends and I over the fall, writes: The ability to get behind the wheel of a car for the first time, and go anywhere, is a distinct American rite of passage. For many young people, their first car grants them a freedom to explore their city on an intimate level, with their windows down and music blasting - and away from the prying eyes of parents. It can be a means to escape monotony and fear — especially during the height of the pandemic — and a gathering space where they can let it all go.
Huge thanks to Eve for bringing this work to life. Thank you to my beautiful friends and the city itself - without whom, there would be no pictures.
