Thank you to all those who attended our opening night screening of Reza Dahya’s (@afilmbyrez) BOXCUTTER (@boxcutterfilm). We were thrilled to host a packed theater for this nuanced and joyful story about our evolving city.
We were joined after the screening by director Reza Dahya, producer Soko Negash, and actors Ashton James, ZOE, and Viphusan Vani for a beautiful conversation on working together, capturing Toronto’s gentrification, and the film’s resonance with Regent Park and communities like it. (@socacola@itiszoe@ashtonmjames@viphusan)
Thank you to Adiel Golot for sharing their short film BONNARIEN (adiel.officiel @postgenresproductions) before BOXCUTTER for its Canadian premiere!
Thank you to our co-presenters @_liftfilm and @csvtoronto

Growing up in Regent Park, the stakes were pretty high for children of immigrants like me to find success. It was always a choice between following my heart towards the arts or choosing a path that promised security.
Somehow, I held onto my dreams since I was a kid, and now, that journey has brought me to an incredible milestone - my acting debut as part of the opening night film at the @regentparkfilm festival. It’s a blessing to share this work with the community, as it couldn’t be more full circle than this.
Our film is a love letter to Toronto, painting an artist’s journey on a vibrant canvas filled with moments of doubt, fear, and a search for belonging.
I’ve seen Regent Park evolve over the past two decades, and despite all those changes, dreams have a way of surviving through it all. To all the dreamers in Regent Park and beyond, I hope this story tugs at your heart. Thank you for welcoming our film home, right here where I was raised.

After his laptop is stolen, an aspiring rapper goes on a quest across the gentrifying streets of Toronto to recover his music in time for a potentially life-changing meeting with a Grammy Award-winning producer.
Reza Dahya is known for his work as a host and producer of OTA Live on FLOW 93.5 FM in Toronto. He transitioned into filmmaking with his short films ESHA, FIVE DOLLARS, and THE WORST PART and recently completed his debut feature, BOXCUTTER.
Mauricette Bonnarien, a dock worker at the French Guiana port of Dégrad-des-Cannes, is a slam poet who is determined to change her last name from the colonial name that was imposed onto her ancestors. Struggling against the inefficiency of French bureaucracy, Mauricette instead uses her craft of slam poetry to begin the process of healing this long-standing generational trauma.
Adiel Goliot is a French screenwriter, filmmaker and slam poetry artist. Goliot was the French slam-poet winner in 2020 and a semi-finalist in the 2021 Slam World competition. He also gives writing and slam workshops in prisons and schools and is currently developing a new short film about the world of incarceration. BONNARIEN is his first short film.
