Branford Marsalis Quartet at The Triple Door
Gone are the days when the Branford Marsalis Quartet would take residence at Seattle's iconic Jazz Alley, and play nine sets over six nights—a true high point of the annual jazz calendar in the Emerald City. Of course Marsalis is a man with many irons in the fire, thus curtailing to a degree, the frequency of the quartet's appearances on the west coast. It began with the elder Marsalis' original quartet with Jeff "Tain" Watts, Robert Hurst and the late, great Kenny Kirkland, and continued with Joey Calderazzo and Eric Revis joining alongside Watts. As the 2000s came to a close, Watts left and was replaced by the then young upstart, Justin Faulkner. Read more on our home page at AllAboutJazz.com (link in bio).

Barry Guy's Blue Shroud Band Ten Year Anniversary
If bassist Barry Guy had only found fame as an improviser, his place in the pantheon would be assured. However, a singular approach to his instrument and collaborations with the likes of Evan Parker, Cecil Taylor, Bill Dixon, Marilyn Crispell, Mats Gustafsson, Derek Bailey and Howard Riley represent only one facet of his many talents. As an esteemed interpreter of Baroque classical and contemporary music, as well as a storied large ensemble leader and formidable composer, he transcends genre. The Label Head: Nils Winther
Talk to anyone from around the jazz business and they'll all tell you the same thing, there is no shortage of it. There is plenty of great music being made by plenty of great musicians. In fact, the supply is probably outpacing the demand. And yet independent jazz labels are having a tough time. Do they just have the same woes plaguing labels of all genres; streaming, low royalty rates, and downloads? Yes and no.
I got an insight by speaking with Nils Winther, owner of Steeplechase Records which is a family run business that has been around for over half a century. Nils began his career recording the early giants of jazz and has weathered all of the changes within the industry since that time. Read more on our home page at AllAboutJazz.com (link in bio).

Jenny Scheinman Brings the Experience of Awe
Play your violin for us like that wild, joyful hippie girl. You who look as if you might have come from the steppes of Russia instead of the Lost Coast, a remote region of northern California prone to earthquakes and mudslides. You who galloped into school on a snorting mare, its hair used to string the bow you wave before grabbing the violin as if it were a chicken running around the coop. Roll your perpetually startled eyes at it, scold it, fidget, fuss and fiddle us through the roof, fiddle us over the moon, higher than jazz is meant to fly. Saw those strings with your stick as if they were logs from the giant redwoods tied together in a raft floating down the Trinity River as it snakes through Humboldt County. Fill the halls with the ozone of your passion. Play those swinging, bouncy melodies, that grooving funk/jazz, the restless tarantellas that make the listeners' ears dance, wounds them, then nurses them like the eternal caregiver. Belgrade Jazz Festival 2024
It is possible that, of all the major cities of Europe, the least understood in the Western world is Belgrade, Serbia. In the 1990's, when the wars in the former Yugoslavia were raging, Serbia was a major topic in the world news media. A NATO aerial bombing campaign in 1999 ended the conflict. Serbia was left with a severely damaged economy and its former president, Slobodan Milošević, incarcerated in The Hague (home of the International Criminal Court). After the breakup of the Yugoslav federation, the republics of Croatia and Slovenia quickly became members of the European Union. Serbia has not yet met the requirements to join. From Flock to Shepherd: The Evolution of the Drummer-Led Ensemble in Jazz
On November 15th, 2017 at 8:30pm, the Jazz Standard in New York City had a line around the block. Starting from the dual entrance of the Jazz Standard jazz club and Blue Smoke restaurant in the direct middle of East 27th Street, the line of people stretched almost to Lexington Avenue, nearly 300 feet. Just after 9:00pm, audience members from the earlier set began to be released. The faces included some of the most prominent members of the New York Jazz Scene as well as members of house bands for every talk show in town. After another twenty minutes, the line of people slowly moved through the two glass doors, past the entrance of Blue Smoke, and down into the bowels of the Jazz Standard. At a wooden desk featuring a glass case of memorabilia, each audience member was greeted by a host and asked if they have a reservation. After confirmation, the audience was led into the club. A long bar, already busy and without an open seat, was first seen. Read more on our home page at AllAboutJazz.com (link in bio).

JazzFest Berlin 2024
For its sixtieth edition, the renowned JazzFest Berlin not only presented a full program of 24 shows by over 120 performers from around the globe, but also ran a research lab looking back at the event's history, and organized a series of participatory community events in the nearby district of Moabit. Not that it in any way needed to gild the lily as the music was typically superb. As is also now customary for what is probably Europe's premier jazz festival, most of the shows took place in the comfort of the Haus Der Berliner Festspiele, with other concerts taking place in nearby clubs and the iconic Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. A Brief Guide To Lebanese Jazz
Lebanon is known for many things—its lush valleys, a fertile coastal plain and a 170 km-long mountain range carpeted with cedar, oak and pine. Beirut, Tripoli, Sidon, Tyre, Byblos and Baalbek—its cities' names resonate with history's vibrations. These are cities that have borne more history than most.
It is a country renowned for its love of art and culture. Music is everywhere. Singer Fairouz, one of the most famous and instantly recognizable of Arabic voices since the early '50s, is still queen. Pop and rock are highly popular though jazz is played in many locales throughout Beirut, often against the background of eating, drinking and talking.
