Keratopigmentation (KTP) is a process that permanently changes eye color. A practitioner bores a tiny hole in a patient’s cornea with a laser and injects pigment—blue, green, amber, honey, take your pick. Though the procedure has been relatively common in Europe for the last decade or so, it is still very new to the US. Currently only a handful of stateside clinics engage in shade-switching (arguably an ophthalmological version of code-switching) and the price for the makeover is uninsurably, electively high. The device used is not FDA-approved for this purpose. And it’s worthy of caution. Earlier this year, the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a warning about KTP, enumerating potential risks, including vision loss from possible bacterial infection. Though “yikes” may be the only rational response to the notion of KTP, 2024 saw a growth in its popularity.
