2024 was meeting a cat in Marfa and leading a gallery walk with my angels at @cubbyholebar and posing with my coworkers for David Byrne’s 2024 NY Film Festival poster and picking flowers shaped like bowls of strawberry ice cream at Manitoga and eating perfect birthday dinner.

Mom and I went to Turnov and cleared overgrowth from her grandfather and uncle’s grave. I hand-delivered Esmé her birthday present (not seasonally appropriate for July but better 6 months late than never) and Noona was perfect (of course). I went to Stockholm and saw my sweet Astrid for the first time in 5 years.

I hit a lucky strike and held so many cats and swam in rivers and biked to the beach.

Jumoke, Storm and I developed tour programs for Pace– some of the most rewarding work I’ve done this year.

I went to Maine and rode in a convertible and spent many hours in awe of Robert Frank and perhaps most importantly

encountered the largest clove of garlic I’ve ever seen!

This life is not always easy but I feel certain it’s worth it. Not pictured: many hugs, kisses, good books, shared meals, belly laughs, my grandparents.

From now on my job is just to stand in the kitchen and drink a cup of tea and open the window and let a few of the bugs in and feel the wind on my face and bid my neighbors a good evening! ok

East-facing windows. Lasts only for a few minutes each morning but it has always been my favorite thing

I recently rediscovered over 2 hours of unedited VHS footage my grandfather took during a visit to Czechoslovakia in 1988.

My grandfather (along with the rest of my family) was stripped of his Czechoslovak citizenship after fleeing the 1968 Soviet invasion. Two decades later, with Czechoslovakia under hard-line communist rule and continued Russian occupation, he was able to pay his homeland a brief visit.

When discussing the footage over email recently my grandfather noted how under communism “everything was in bad shape, neglected, and very sad.” These clips from Prague are some of the “nicest” shots from this tape. While they may not be the most holistic portrayal of life under communist rule, they speak (I think) to Prague’s resilience and beauty despite enduring decades of multiple different occupations.
