Children around the world deserve our love and protection. We must put them first. For #WorldChildrensDay, we continue to call on Congress, the Biden Administration, and global leaders to prioritize our shared humanity and end the supply of weapons being used to destroy these precious young lives. Of the 1200 Israelis killed during the Hamas-led attack on 10/7, at least 38 were children, and at least two child hostages still remain in Gaza. In the months following, over 16,900 Palestinian children, out of at least 43,000 Palestinians, have been killed in Israeli attacks, including dozens of months-old infants. Over 19,000 Palestinian children have been orphaned in Gaza, and over 700,000 children have been forcibly displaced from their homes and shelters — many multiple times. Over 200 children in Lebanon, out of at least 3,000 people, have been killed, and over 1,100 injured, by Israeli attacks. “Compassion— and international law— must prevail.” - James Elder, UNICEF 10/13/23 One year ago, Artists4Ceasefire echoed the prescient words of @james_unicef in our open letter, calling on global leaders to act with compassion, prevent further loss of life in Palestine and Israel, and follow the existing laws in place to protect humanity. The 1,200 Israelis killed and over 200 taken hostage in the Hamas-led attack on 10/7, and 5,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza by Israeli bombardment at the time of publishing, was an already catastrophic loss of life. One year later, the images we are seeing from Gaza and Lebanon are an unbearable repetition of the wholesale destruction of life. More than 43,000 Palestinians (over 186,000 according to The Lancet) and over 2,000 people in Lebanon have been killed by Israeli bombardment, and 9 Israeli hostages have been killed by Hamas or by Israeli assaults. Israeli evacuation orders and bombing have forcibly displaced at least 90% of Gaza’s population, many of them multiple times, and over 1 million people in Lebanon. An estimated 400,000 Palestinians are under Israeli siege and bombardment in northern Gaza without access to food, water, fuel, or medical care - with starvation and disease already widespread. Every moment of suffering that continues is a decision by @potus, many members of Congress, and global leaders who have the power to end this nightmare now. We will continue to demand that those in power finally take action to end the catastrophic suffering of millions of people, and the destruction of pathways to a just and lasting peace.
