Hot and cold times gone bye in the saddle. No better place to take in life than between a horse’s ears.

Stu Percy & his family have managed the Greenstone, Routeburn, and Elfin Bay Stations for almost 40 years. 20 odd years ago, this 60,000-acre trio of cattle & sheep operations came under ownership of Ngāi Tahu, the principal Māori iwi (tribe) of New Zealand’s South Island. The land actually represents one of the community’s key ancestral migratory pathways. Each Autumn, the Percys saddle up for a week or so to gather & wean the cattle herd grazing in these gorgeously remote river valleys. At the mercy of unpredictable West Coast weather, the work is windy, rainy, muddy, and cold. Cooking over fires, drinking from snowmelt streams, and dulling any injury with an extra splash or twelve of Jameson, it’s a true cattle drive outta those old time trail stories. And of course, I wore my brother Harry’s old spurs the whole way. Figured he’d be proud to see em get nice & dirty.

April 2024. Back to New Zealand for the Autumn weaning muster at Greenstone, Routeburn, & Elfin Bay Stations. We spent a couple weeks in the saddle pushing 500 Herefords down some gorgeously dramatic rivers and valleys of the Southern Alps. Hard to beat cowboying in the prettiest country on Earth. Saludos to my Kiwi crew for this great privilege of coming along - I’ll bring more tequila next time round.

This invitational event brings working cowboys from some of the finest ranches in the country to ride for the brand & demonstrate skills they use all year round. A whole lotta pride comes with being a part of this historic tradition. Give these vaqueros a cheer if you're in the stands tonight, will ya?

The name refers to the vaquero tradition of lining ranch horses up abreast, backed against a taut line, for selection at the start of a day’s work. Practiced in Mexico, South America, and on our family ranch of Chaparrosa (supposedly the only in the US to do so), this practice reflects stunning discipline & mind among a Remuda. Chaparrosa’s finest Santa Gertrudis bull, Señor Pico, is artfully rendered on the label of each bottle of wine. November played host to a kickoff pasture party. January, the casing of the first bottles for public sale. Today, the website and social media are online. So very proud of mi Mama and primo Henry for bringing this operation to life. 2023 behind the camera. Texas, Australia, Tanzania. 85,000 photos 55 hours of video 3 continents in 5 days and more orders of flautas de pollo than I am comfortable publicly mentioning. No plans to top anything next year, except the flautas part.

July, August, September Rough & tough 2.5 months back in TZ, documenting Moyowosi & Kizigo game reserves. Alone in the wild with my local team, we captured 6,000 sq km worth of creatures, landscapes, communities, and true East African beauty. One of the greater professional challenges of my life! Working across this continent continues to be such a privilege. Kwa marafiki zangu, tutaonana badaaye.
