#ARTWORKOFTHEWEEK - Originally on display in Washington D.C. and repeated in variations in Vienna, the performance series “15 Minute Rest” by Borjana Ventzislavova invites visitors to literally lay down for 15 minutes. While resting on a typical bedroom setup within an art space, the participants could choose to read important political documents, for example the United States Declaration of Independence or the European Convention on Human Rights. The artist asked the participants to behave passively or actively, while reflecting upon and expressing their relationship to said documents, thereby merging the private with the public. Tonica Hunter (they/she) is a curator and founded her own club nights and collectives in Vienna. For over a decade, Tonica has been bringing together Black artists from across Europe, shaping critical exhibitions, programmes and safe spaces. Tonica’s background as a Jamaican Londoner shapes her musical choices and work. Tonica uses Bricolage for the sound production of this work, combining her knowledge as a self-taught DJ, curator and music lover. The result is a soundscape of self-produced and sampled elements designed to give listeners hope and space to heal. In the work of the Austrian artist group @gelitin_official, this playful and light approach is an essential aspect of their creative process, as in the sculpture Bonsai Tree from 2009. The plush tree, which is powered by a motor, invites the viewer - not only at Christmas time, but throughout the year - to maintain a playful view of the world. #ARTWORKOFTHEWEEK - I’m sorry I made you feel that way is a performative self-portrait by Martina Menegon, based on biometric data collected daily via a smart ring worn on her finger. This data is processed through machine learning and linked to a digital avatar that interacts with exhibition visitors. The avatar’s condition and behavior directly reflect Menegon’s physical state—fatigue or stress deteriorate its appearance and communication abilities.
