Silvia Federici’s groundbreaking feminist Marxist study Caliban and the Witch (2004) is a key conceptual reference text for the artist and contributes another meta-level to the performance: Federici argues that the fear of women’s bodies, medical knowledge, and (sexual) self-determination among patriarchal power holders was decisive in both medieval witch hunts and the beginnings of modern capitalism.

Kazuko Miyamoto continuously combines her Japanese origins with Western influences, particularly those from her New York environment. In her practice, questions about the role of rituals and gestures crystallize in the motif of the kimono in particular, which is both a central element of her performances and an object in its own right.

The exhibition was conceived by MADRE - Museo d’arte contemporanea donnaregina, Naples, and is accompanied by a comprehensive publication.

#ARTWORKOFTHEWEEK - Originally on display in Washington D.C. and repeated in variations in Vienna, the performance series “15 Minute Rest” by Borjana Ventzislavova invites visitors to literally lay down for 15 minutes. While resting on a typical bedroom setup within an art space, the participants could choose to read important political documents, for example the United States Declaration of Independence or the European Convention on Human Rights. The artist asked the participants to behave passively or actively, while reflecting upon and expressing their relationship to said documents, thereby merging the private with the public.

Do you remember that tingling feeling when you were a child and couldn't wait to finally open the next Advent door to be one day closer to Christmas? Everything was light, magical and playful. In the work of the Austrian artist group @gelitin_official, this playful and light approach is an essential aspect of their creative process, as in the sculpture Bonsai Tree from 2009. The plush tree, which is powered by a motor, invites the viewer - not only at Christmas time, but throughout the year - to maintain a playful view of the world. In this way, let's recapture Christmas! ✨

Moths, bats and worms are taking over Belvedere 21 and throwing the doors open to heretics and witches: Monster Chetwynd’s (ze/per) first solo museum exhibition in Austria interweaves art, (hi)stories, theory, craft and community to form an expansive work that was developed especially for the museum and will be activated and animated by a performance twice over the course of the exhibition.

#ARTWORKOFTHEWEEK - I’m sorry I made you feel that way is a performative self-portrait by Martina Menegon, based on biometric data collected daily via a smart ring worn on her finger. This data is processed through machine learning and linked to a digital avatar that interacts with exhibition visitors. The avatar’s condition and behavior directly reflect Menegon’s physical state—fatigue or stress deteriorate its appearance and communication abilities. With this work, Menegon highlights the connection between the physical and virtual self, emphasizing a new, hybrid form of embodiment and the concept of virtual self-care.

In Shelter (1980), Kazuko Miyamoto combines branches and colorful ribbons in a sculptural intervention inspired by makeshift shelters in New York’s Central Park. Often displayed outdoors, her works intertwine simple materials and ephemeral forms, creating a dialogue between art, nature, and the public.

The exhibition was conceived by MADRE · museo d'arte contemporanea donnaregina, Naples, and curated by Eva Fabbris.
