the line remains latent from our long distance call between Chicago and Lagos

a recording of our conversation “The Ancestral Disk: Tracing the Connections between West African and Chicago House Music” at @marianeibrahimgallery & the associated zine, ‘Feedback,’ are both available via the link in our bios

together, these offerings archive @kemkemlij’s research conducted during her @villa.albertine residency and explore how West African rhythms and Chicago House call and respond to one another across the water

through a consideration of the monarch butterfly’s migratory mechanisms as an allegory for the transmission of music across the Black Atlantic, we seek to position the sonic traditions birthed from instances of mass migration as sources of divine vision and ancestral guidance

widest wings of gratitude to @collinastrada for dressing us in their SS23 collection, which reveres the resolute magic of monarchs butterflies and thank you to @bellhue for documenting us

& may our gathering stand as a testament to the power of transatlantic dialogue, a call for remembrance, and a vision of our collective future

from the inner sanctum of rhythm itself,
Olukemi Lijadu, Camille Bacon, and Jada-Amina

RECONTAMINATING BLACK VISUAL CULTURE: New Bottega and the Betrayal of Black Freedom Dreams

we chatted about the @carriemaeweems x @asaprocky x @newbottega father’s day campaign, the anesthetizing of Black visual culture, and the urgency of remaining clear in our commitment to freedom beyond representation. we wonder, in the wake of this campaign, what becomes of Carrie Mae Weems’ seat at her own ‘Kitchen Table’ and how we can insist on a Black visual culture that contaminates propriety.

available now for free via substack (& also via spotify, apple music, etc.)

** please note that we recorded this from our respective phone hot-spots, so bear with us as the sound cuts in and out at times

we learned from @alexispauline who learned from Sylvia Wynter that “cultural workers… have a responsibility for what is and is not imaginable in [our] lifetimes.”

for @dariasimoneharper & i, quantum mechanics, as a conceptual framework, cleaves open the realm of the “imaginable” as it proposes an alternative means of understanding the universe’s language by devising models far more vast than those put forth by traditional physics. if quantum physicists use their equations to re-render the possible, we wondered what it might mean to apply such a lens to cultural criticism…

and, boom, @jupiter.magazine issue 002: QUANTUM was born !

🪐🤲🏽🖤

thank you to every person/place/entity that put wind under the wings of this work ! & like we said in the editor’s note, “may your soul strip down here, dissolve into the dust of our black eternity”

“The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also. My drooping hopes came to life again with the flowers. I was dreaming of freedom again…” — Harriet A. Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, 1861

the Chowan river, Harriet’s current of self-emancipation / @dariasimoneharper & i in ceremony / an excerpt from the welcome poem @michelleisrizin recited on 21/3/24

thank you @johnica & @michelle for gathering us for a weekend of praise and conjure 🤲🏽
