Every year, World AIDS Day is a stark reminder that we’re so far from where we should be in eradicating this virus. But this year, I’m finding hope in the young changemakers leading the way to an AIDS-free future, so I’m extremely proud to hand over my Instagram to the amazing Nomonde Ngema, a young HIV activist from my home country of South Africa. Nomonde’s advocacy work protecting the rights of people living with HIV – especially women and girls – has inspired me and our team at CTAOP , and I know you’ll be inspired by her, too.

Ending AIDS as a public health threat is only possible when the rights of women and girls are protected and upheld. This means improving their social and economic opportunities and ensuring they have the resources and
knowledge to make informed choices to lower their risk of HIV. The path that ends AIDS is a “rights” path.

Right here all day today, Nomonde will share her journey and the powerful work she’s doing to empower young women like her.

Join me, @unaidsglobal, @ctaop, & @ibano.monde in our call for protecting the human right to health for everyone, everywhere.

Missing the energy of being in New York for UNGA and Climate Week, so have been reminiscing on past years! A look back at 2015 as we called on accelerated action to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS. We said it then and we continue to say it …there is reason to hope, we know what works—empowering and supporting young people to take charge of their health and build the future they envision for themselves.

Feeling so inspired watching young leaders gather at the @UnitedNations and after listening to UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres’ speech on #OurCommonFuture. May we all continue to hold the invest and believe in creating change for the better.

Heartbroken and ill learning of Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei’s murder at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. For all the work that’s been done to fight it, gender-based violence and femicide continue as a GLOBAL pandemic. As a South African, this hits home for me. While globally a staggering 1 in 3 women experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime, the World Bank cited in 2023 that in Eastern and Southern Africa that number is 42% of women. We are failing women and girls. Our leaders must do more. Our communities must do more. WE must do more.
