THE WHITNEY MUSEUM X TOTAL LUXURY SPA. FOR THE 2024 WHITNEY BIENNIAL: EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING.

A special thank you to @monastictrio and @beatrizcifuentesl for making this happen and putting on an incredible show
βThe starting process and finishing process to these books is the most difficult. Opening old images up, memories coming back, remembering the great times and the not so great times. When we start getting into a design rhythm it gets easier but then as youβre finishing it you donβt really want to let it go and all the memories come back again and you just want to make sure itβs the best thing you could have created in honor of a special friend.β β@DanielDeSure of @CommonwealthProjects on making Noah Davis: In Detail for @DavidZwirnerBooks
This title, designed by Commonwealth Projects in Los Angeles, brings into focus the rich, painterly variety and luminous detail of Davisβs canvases. A longtime friend of the artist, Daniel shared with us his experience designing the book, the discoveries he found along the way, and the weight of working on a project so close to the heart. Itβs difficult to know where to start when talking about something so close to the heart. We started working on this book a little over two years ago and when it first came up I didnβt know where to start. Noahβs world looked a lot different than it did when we worked side by side on his first book back in 2009 in my garage / studio. Noahβs paintings were touring the world, they were in the Venice Biennale, and he had his first major NY show at @davidzwirner .
.
I had met kids in NY that discovered Noahβs story after he had passed (which is its own kind special reality). His bright energy was so big that it was continuing to build and burn and effect those that were fortunate to cross paths with it. I thought about how so many of those kids were seeing his work for the first time and how much depth the paintings have.Β How each painting is layered both technically and conceptually and if there was a way to bring that to people that have never seen the paintings in person. How can we be the Shepards of Noahβs energy and keep it intimate like the garage days?
.
βIn Detailβ is for those that never had a chance to meet Noah. For those that havenβt had an opportunity to be in the presence of one of his paintings. Itβs also for those that are close and want to feel closer like I do.
.
This book wouldnβt have happened without Anne Wehr who is an absolute force and continued to push this forward despite all the hurdles. To Helen, for always believing in a higher power and always, always believing in Noah. Karon, for being the rock and Lindsay, for being so diligent about getting the timeline and facts right and for alwayβs doing whatβs best for Noah. Lastly, Andrew for being in the trenches and continuing to be my ride or die.Β
