Portraits with @danielazirizzotti 🖤
I met Daniela in 2022 when looking for a new place in Toronto and immediately loved her vibe. Being a witness to her hard work and journey so far is inspiring ✨

The Gorge 🚱
My first time hiking this trail I was 9 or 10 years old. My uncle Al took me, my sister and cousins in tow. I remember my feet killing me because I wore sandals which was arguably the worst decision but how was I to know, I was a child lol. My uncle packed cheese sandwiches and diet cokes for us. We had a picnic on the big rock and watched the whirlpool jet rip around; people screamed so loud on the boat I wasn’t sure if they were having fun or not. My cousin almost got bit by a rattlesnake which was the first - and, so far, only - time I’ve seen a rattlesnake. My uncle smoked a lot back then. He heaved and coughed and made frequent stops to catch his breath (once to have a smoke) but he was determined. I remember thinking “if this guy passes out, how the hell are we gonna carry him back up?”
The hike is not easy. It’s over 100 steep steps down, then a treacherous climb back up along the water. One slip on an unstable rock could be a broken ankle. One misstep could be a fall right into the deadly current below. But it was this trip I became obsessed. It was a challenge I wanted to do over and over again. The promise of danger made it so intriguing.
At 12, my friend (also named Britney) and I would ride our bikes out and do the trail in the summer. This was before we had cell phones, and our parents definitely didn’t know where we were. We climbed and explored and marvelled at the whirlpool. We met tourists and took photos for them. We were on an adventure and completely oblivious to the risks we were taking.
This hike will always be nostalgic for me. Each turn unlocks a memory, guiding me to the spots I found when I was a kid. It’s exactly how I remember, only I am different. I am here with new perspectives and fears and all the boring things that come with growing up. But, for a brief moment, I get to see the world with that child-like wonder I had 20 years ago. I still look for the rattlesnake 🖤

If you don’t end up in the hospital on the first night of your cottage weekend are you even having fun??
(I’m fine - it was just the worst IBS flare up of my life 😜)
