A few memories:
i [“Big Kahoona”: Odawara Station — 27|08]: Man we met while waiting for a train. His skills involved being rude to strangers, lighting up with the burning edge of a boom and smoking a cigarette through his nose. Warmed up enough eventually though, and requested to take his shirt off when we got this image. It appears he likely has a few friends with matching tattoos.
ii [“Iron Lung”: Namba Bears, Osaka — 30|08]: Singer we saw a quarter of my size with a voice ten times as loud. Possibly the only metal artist I’ve seen pirouette better than a ballerina. Dinner was served in the back and everyone was eating hotpot during the show. Small room, humid weather (you can taste the smell).
iii [“Playboy Flamenco”: Bar Farruca, Kyoto — 27|08]: A 70-something year old bar owner whose passions include flamenco guitar, woodwork and entertaining his friend, the one clapping, that is a self-described playboy. They spoke to us all night through google translate and assumed all Australians dance like Ray Gun when presented the opportunity. I obliged.
iv [“Childhood friendship”: Tokyo — 04|09]: My old neighbour in the US and childhood best friend, who I have had the privilege of having in my life for over 20 years now. A moment that almost captures two decades of pure adoration. Almost.
v [“No smoke”: Sent James Club, Kyoto — 28|08]: One of the best bartenders I’ve ever met, who was appropriately judgmental, extremely helpful, and could convince James Bond himself to have a drink stirred over shaken.
vi [“Eyeball Tuna”: Kuromon Markets, Osaka — 31|07]: The happiest fishmonger in all of Japan. Loves to see the world through the cut out eyes of a big tuna. Only smiles when posing with severed body parts.
vii [“Grandfather’s”: Grandfather’s Bar, Tokyo — 28|08]: The biggest if you know you know I’ve ever encountered. Given the volume of messages I received from friends who have previously been, I don’t need to state the impact the venue has on people. We stayed for four albums and John Mayer was spinning when we left.
viii [“🖤”: Streets of Ebisu, Tokyo — 04|09]: Too many words, all of them loving.

I haven’t written a piece like this in a while - but given the recent news, felt it was necessary. To everyone who has survived or is undergoing treatment for cancer and to those that are or have been carers, sending enduring love. To experience the pain of losing someone you love to the disease is unparalleled. It’s a bizarre club I don’t wish membership upon anyone, but stand with, always. 🤍
