Happy Birthday, Wassily Kandinsky! Born on December 16, 1866, Wassily Kandinsky revolutionized the art world as one of the pioneers of abstract painting. His work vibrates with colour, rhythm, and a deep connection to music—transforming canvases into symphonies of form and passion. Currently on display at the Fondation Beyeler as part of the collection presentation "Daughter of Freedom", Kandinsky’s masterpiece “Fuga” (1914) exemplifies his brilliance. The freedom of artistic Evolution "Composition No. XVI" (Compositie I, Arbres), 1912–1913, by Piet Mondrian marks a pivotal moment in the Dutch artist’s evolution—where natural forms meet the abstract vision that would define his legacy. At first glance, the work retains the essence of its subject: trees. Yet, as you look closer, Mondrian’s abstraction begins to take shape. He distils the organic complexity of nature into a structured interplay of intersecting lines and planes, hinting at his journey toward pure abstraction. This work belongs to Mondrian’s “analytical phase,” where his experimentation with Cubism, influenced by artists like Picasso and Braque, reimagined natural forms as geometric structures. The muted colour palette enhances the architectural qualities of the composition, paving the way for his iconic use of primary colours in later works.
