Happy Birthday, Wassily Kandinsky!

Born on December 16, 1866, Wassily Kandinsky revolutionized the art world as one of the pioneers of abstract painting. His work vibrates with colour, rhythm, and a deep connection to music—transforming canvases into symphonies of form and passion.

Currently on display at the Fondation Beyeler as part of the collection presentation "Daughter of Freedom", Kandinsky’s masterpiece “Fuga” (1914) exemplifies his brilliance. Just like a musical fugue, this work layers themes and counterpoints in perfect harmony, creating a dynamic composition that celebrates artistic freedom and innovation.

Visit the collection presentation “Daughter of Freedom” and admire this and other works by your favourite artists from the Beyeler Collection until 5 January 2025.

Alongside the collection presentation, the major retrospective “Matisse - Invitation to the Voyage” is on display, featuring further masterpieces by Henri Matisse, another virtuoso of early 20th century modernism. [Ticket link in Bio]

The freedom of artistic Evolution

"Composition No. XVI" (Compositie I, Arbres), 1912–1913, by Piet Mondrian marks a pivotal moment in the Dutch artist’s evolution—where natural forms meet the abstract vision that would define his legacy.

At first glance, the work retains the essence of its subject: trees.

Yet, as you look closer, Mondrian’s abstraction begins to take shape.

He distils the organic complexity of nature into a structured interplay of intersecting lines and planes, hinting at his journey toward pure abstraction.

This work belongs to Mondrian’s “analytical phase,” where his experimentation with Cubism, influenced by artists like Picasso and Braque, reimagined natural forms as geometric structures.

The muted colour palette enhances the architectural qualities of the composition, paving the way for his iconic use of primary colours in later works.

There is still time: Until 5 January 2025, you have the wonderful opportunity to see the current collection presentation ‘Daughter of Freedom’ at the Fondation Beyeler and admire this and other masterpieces by renowned collection artists.

Art as a ray of light in the winter gloom

While winter settles in outside, the Fondation Beyeler glows all the brighter with the beauty of art. One highlight that stands out is Paul Cézanne’s masterpiece “Sous-bois (Chemin mas jolie du Château Noir)”(1900-1902), currently featured in the collection presentation "Daughter of Freedom".

This painting captures the enchanting atmosphere of a sunlit forest in Provence.

Cézanne’s masterful use of colour and structure brings the warm earth tones and the delicate play of sunlight on the path vividly to life. The composition radiates depth and tranquillity, immersing us in nature—a particularly striking contrast to the somber days of winter.

A visit to the museum is the perfect opportunity to recharge your batteries, especially on grey days. The Fondation Beyeler is open daily, including during Advent and all public holidays.

Alongside the collection presentation, the large retrospective ‘Matisse - Invitation to the Voyage’ is currently on display. Plan your bright winter art journey now.

Visit our website for more information on the programme and for tickets!

🎄 Fondation Beyeler "Advents-Gewinnspiel": I: Imprinted impressions

To kick off our "Advents-Gewinnspiel" today, the first round brings you the chance to win a premium art print of Henri Matisse's stunning "Algue blanche sur fond rouge et vert"—a true highlight inspired by our current exhibition "Matisse – Invitation to the Voyage"

"The purpose of travel is to widen the space that surrounds us." – Henri Matisse

Even long after his many journeys, Matisse continued to dream of the faraway, inspiring places he visited.

The vibrant colours, patterns, shapes and light he encountered, profoundly influenced his art.

His most distant voyage to the South Seas left a lasting impression, inspiring his fascination with coral, algae and other marine treasures, which he preserved in his later works.

Winners of the first round will receive a 6-colour digital print on Rives paper (60 x 50 cm), allowing them to "widen their space" in the style of Matisse at home and fill it with an elegant touch of art.

How to enter the "Advents-Gewinnspiel":
1. Follow Fondation Beyeler on Instagram.
2. Like the post featuring the prize you wish to win.
3. Tag a friend in the comments.

The winners will be randomly drawn from all valid entries and notified via direct message on Instagram after the competition. Legal recourse is excluded. Find the full terms and conditions of participation on our website!

New rounds with exciting prizes start on December 6, 13 and 20, 2024, each running for one week.

Good luck and happy festive season!
