Daydreamer / Michael Kirby and The Cottonmen I first met Mike in the 90s when we were signed to Nigel Martin-Smith as the boy band Goal! Second slide shows us in all our brooding glory 🤣. Mike got back in touch with me earlier this year and told me he wanted to make some music inspired by Roy Orbison and early Elvis. As some of you will know, I’ve had a difficult year, and this project with an old friend came at just about the perfect time. We wrote a few songs, and I called on some incredible friends to get involved so we could record them all together, live, in one room @blueprintstudiosuk. The project has taken on a beautiful life of its own with strings, brass, pedal steel, special guests… there’s more to come. Daydreamer is the first song as Michael Kirby and The Cottonmen. Cottonmen because we used to rehearse in one of Manchester’s many disused cotton mills. Somewhat nervous posting this. This year, I challenged myself to write more on my own, to go back to where I started. The constant stream of amazing artists who come through the doors of my studio (many of you will be reading this) are just about the most inspiring thing that can happen to a songwriter. It’s much more difficult for me to sit down with my guitar and stare at that blank page alone. That is what I used to do, and ultimately, it got me into this mess in the first place 😂. It was never my intention to do anything with these songs, just a creative endeavor. To push myself to sit in the chair and just write. I wrote this Christmas song first. To continue my experiment in time travel, I bought a tape machine (the format I first began recording on) and began the (still) infuriating process of recording some of these songs. ‘Christmas On Acid’ is on Bandcamp from today, and there will probably be more to follow.
