Covering @amazingmagazine spring/summer 2023 issue, Conversations with Friends star Jemima Kirke discusses her role in new Apple TV+ drama City on Fire, which was adapted from Garth Risk Hallberg’s 2015 novel of the same name. “I don't consider [the book], and that's not for laziness or disinterest, I just don't think it's relevant,” says Kirke, on bringing a book character to life on screen. “I'll read the book if I want to, and I did read Conversations with Friends because I heard a lot of chatter about Sally Rooney, who I hadn't heard of at that point and so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I really enjoyed the book, but it is an adaptation, it’s a piece of work that is using the book as a source material. It’s helpful to the writers and I did get a sense for Conversations with Friends of who they wanted Melissa to be before I auditioned. You only get so many pages for an audition and so you have to go off something. Doing an audition is like being on a game show where they never tell you whether you've got the answer right or not, so the more information you can get, the better.” City on Fire begins streaming on 12 May on @appletv . “Holistically [in songwriting], you're trying to communicate a feeling and I think that's a combination of everything. It's like: ‘The lyric – is that right? The melody – is that right? The production – is that right?
