‘Making, Repeating’
1. In Francis Alÿs’ Paradox of Praxis 1 (Sometimes making something leads to nothing) (1997) Alÿs is filmed pushing a block of ice through the streets of Mexico City. As the ice slowly melts over time, nothing remains of it.
2. Alvin Lucier’s I Am Sitting in a Room (1981) features Mary Lucier’s Polaroid Image Series on its cover. Mary’s pictures, which are copies of copies originating from a photograph, offer a visual equivalent to Alvin’s sound work, where each recording is repeatedly re-recorded until it reaches abstraction.
3. The cooking scene from Head-On (2004) by Fatih Akin demonstrates each step of making dolma, which is flushed down the toilet at the end of the scene.
4. Dreamwork (2001) by Peter Tscherkassky briefly features the making of itself, with Tscherkassky’s hands on a lightbox, using a scissor, film strips and tacks.

5. Jan Švankmajer’s Dimensions of Dialogue (Možnosti dialogu) (1983) is a stop-motion film featuring endless reuse of objects and materials until they turn to clay.

6. In The Rehearsal (2022) by Nathan Fielder, real-life scenarios are recreated with actors and highly detailed replicas of the buildings in which they occurred, allowing participants to rehearse their responses over and over again as close to reality as possible.
7. Annabel Nicolson’s Reel Time (1970) is a performance in which Nicolson ran one loop of film (depicting herself sewing) through a sewing machine and then through a film projector, creating a pierced image that got destroyed by the end of the performance.
8. Turkish prison beadwork is an intricate craft developed by inmates in prisons. The process involves weaving tiny, colourful beads into patterns to create items like keychains, pouches and cigarette cases.
