This week’s #DocOfTheWeek is ‘Monk in Pieces’ by Directors/Producers Billy Shebar and David Roberts. Doc of the Week highlights a documentary project raising funds through IDA’s Fiscal Sponsorship program! Learn more at documentary.org. (Link in bio)

Meredith Monk — composer, performer, and multimedia artist — overcame a hostile critical establishment to become one of the great artistic pioneers of her generation. In the midst of her latest creation, Indra’s Net, Monk faces mortality: can such personal work be performed without her? Featuring interviews with Björk and David Byrne, ‘Monk in Pieces’ is a mosaic that illuminates Monk’s wildly original vocabulary of sound and imagery. This film is currently in post-production.

In October, in partnership with Cinemateca Portuguesa, Doclisboa organized a huge retrospective of Mexican director Paul Leduc's work. The Portuguese International Documentary Film Festival showed 25 films, including shorts and features, from half-hour TV shows in video to majestic musicals in rarely seen, lavish 35mm prints assembled from several archives. Curated by Boris Nelepo, it was the most comprehensive retrospective of the Mexican director outside his home country to date. Read Victor Guimarães' notes on Leduc's retrospective at #DocumentaryMag. (Link in bio)

“As filmmakers, we do not set out in search of definition. We consider that the daily life of these men, their stories, and the culture they have created... are more important.”

These words appear close to the beginning of De bateyes, Sara Gómez’s poetic 1971 short about the lives of workers on Cuba’s sugarcane plantations. Spoken in voiceover by the director herself, they serve as a kind of mission statement for a filmmaker whose short but remarkable career was built on empathy and curiosity. Read the full #DocumentaryMag article from Rachel Pronger at documentary.org.

Join us for our next IDA Workshop, Listening As Documenting, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, from 1 to 2:30 PM PT, both virtual and in person.

When documentary filmmakers seek experimental forms of nonfiction storytelling, we often look to experimental films and moving image work. But there are other forms of documentary practice, such as in music. In this hybrid workshop, artists Claire Rousay and Lucy Liyou will talk through and demonstrate their processes of using field recordings, textural found sounds, and ambient music in world-building. Moderated by Jameisha Prescod and Tony Nguyen, this hybrid workshop and sound performance encourages us to broaden our expectations of documentary beyond the visual.

This workshop will be free and open to the public. Register using the link in our bio.

ASL interpretation and CART captioning will be provided. For other accommodation requests, please email abby@documentary.org.

About the Getting Real Fellowship
The Getting Real Fellowship seeks to spotlight emerging and mid-career documentary professionals who have inspired visions that will benefit their communities and the field at large.

After attending Getting Real, the fellows spend the next year programming workshops and discussions inspired by their time at the conference. The Fellowship is supported by the NEA and Golden Globe Foundation.

This event is developed by Getting Real ‘24 Fellows Jameisha Prescod and Tony Nguyen.
