Posted @withregram • @bengalfilmarchive Celebrating past glories is an important objective of Bengal Film Archive. That doesn’t mean we lose sight of the good work and accolades that talents from, of and those who reside in Bengal are winning in the contemporary global scenario. We wish to acknowledge their achievements in our ‘In The News’ posts.
We begin with lensman Isshaan Ghosh who recently won the Tiantan Award for Best Cinematography (2024) at the 13th Beijing International Film Festival.
Born in Asansol and brought up mostly in Ajmer, Isshaan Ghosh completed schooling from Mayo College in Ajmer and went on to pursue an honours degree in Philosophy from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
Isshaan began his career as a director's assistant but was soon fascinated with cinematography. He realized his love for it when his feet would involuntarily take him close to the camera department of his films. He switched careers without further ado and requested cinematographer Jay Oza of 'Gully Boy' (2019) and 'Toofan' (2021) fame for a place in his crew. He worked as the second unit cinematographer in Vatsal Neelakantan's 'Friday Night Plan' (2023) and as the DOP in 'Cue Kya Tha?' (2023).
Karan Tejpal’s 'Stolen', a heart-racing tale of an impoverished mother's strife against classism in rural India to get her infant daughter back, is his first independent feature film as a cinematographer. His hard work paid off when he recently won the Tiantan Award for Best Cinematography (2024) for this film. ‘Stolen’ starring Abhishek Banerjee and Aditi Roy Maelzer (Mia Maelzer) was the only Indian entry at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
Passion for breathing life into offbeat and untold stories with stunning visuals keeps him going.
