My last ride in Turkey before crossing into Iraq tomorrow. As I get closer to the border, the checkpoints are getting more frequent, and I’ve spotted some fake cardboard police cars along the way too. It’s time to wash Frankie, check the air filter, and track down that noise I’ve been hearing. Turns out, it’s a lost screw—now I just need to figure out where it came from.. Lake Van, here I come! I can hardly believe I’ve ridden through the caldera of Türkiye’s most active volcano. The landscape here, surrounded by golden trees and towering volcanic peaks, is absolutely breathtaking. The vastness of the lake is beyond what I expected. 411 km ahead (or so I think it will be) until I reach a city I still don’t know how to pronounce. But not so fast—three petrol stations I passed were closed and I run out of petrol on top of a mountain.. For the first time, I must rely on my reserve tank, hoping I make it before it runs out. But that wasn’t it for today.. black clouds begin to stalk me, and I’m not spared from the rain this time. With the bad weather, I’ve had to change my planned route to get to Agri. The day starts early, with 370 km ahead of me, tracing the edge of the Black Sea. After a failed attempt to reach a monastery with Frankie, it’s time to climb to 2400 meters through the mountains. I descend into a valley, only to climb up the other side as the sun sets, navigating endless curves. Finally, I arrive in Bayburt, where I’ll visit Bayburt Castle, which has a turbulent history. Today’s a long day on the bike, crossing mountains, valleys, and soaking in some absolutely spectacular views. After covering the first half of the route, I finally reach the off-road section—everything seemed to be going smoothly... until I come across some freshly dumped tar on road… without any warning! It’s me and you Frankie! It’s no secret that I loved my previous bike, my Honda CRF300 Rally, very much. But this bike… 😍 I’m not sure if it’s because we are both from 1987, or because this bike was build with so much care and attention, or because this motorcycle subtly reacts to temperature, altitude, humidity and everything else - I feel more in touch with my surroundings and with my motorcycle than ever before. I venture into an abandoned city that goes eight levels underground, weaving through narrow tunnels and stairs. Continuing on, Frankie touches the ground for the first time, and, well, I’ve already bent my gear shifter!
