“Phana (practical dreaming)” 2024 for ‘Resonantly Me’ group exhibition opening at the Bakersfield Museum of Art on Thursday, May 30th. . Phana (practical dreaming), 2024 oil on canvas 60 x 48 inches | 152.4 x 121.92 cm . (Excerpt from exhibition catalog) LA-based artist John T.D. Murphy’s deeply personal paintings depict scenes of intimacy, adventure, and isolation within the queer community. Using imagery taken from memory, personal snapshots, and culture at large, Murphy crafts narrative vignettes of queer identity. In Phana (practical dreaming), a young man is seen gazing out of a bank of windows. Referencing artist such as Caspar David Friedrich and Andrew Wyeth, the subject’s outward gaze evokes a longing for the unknown. Set in the Ladera Heights studio of Eli Bucksbaum, a local gathering spot for creatives of all ilk’s, the subject is surrounded by a magpie-like collection of positions taken from the artist’s life (including the first record Murphy and his partner purchased together and a well-loved copy of Lie With Me by Philippe Besson). #art #painting #contemporaryart
