This remains one of my top-5 favorite shots and I have never come close to recreating it despite considerable effort. . I was hiking a few years ago and watching this incredibly vibrant rainbow from an isolated storm that just seemed to last forever. (Swipe for wide shot) . I was carrying two cameras, one for eventual sunset shots and one for wildlife. As I watched this rainbow I stared to think how incredible it would be if a bald eagle flew between me and the rainbow. So I took some test shots just in case. . Well a bald eagle never showed up but several other birds did but we’re all too close to me to get this perspective. Finals I saw this flock of ibis crossing the sky at just the right distance so I swung up my 200-600 and shot a burst. This was one of the results. . I have chased rainbows a number of times since and have managed to line up Osprey and other perched subjects with some degree of success. But nothing like this. . I haven’t shared it in a while and have picked up quite a few new followers recently so I wanted to share it once more. . A full moon rises behind a bald eagle in Winter Garden, Florida. . I have been fortunate enough to line up a bald eagle and the full moon several times and it is always exciting and challenging. . The alignment constantly changes as the moon rises quickly and you never know if the eagle will take off. Plus they need to sit still for a long enough exposure to shoot at f/13 in this case in order to try and still preserve some texture in the moon while being focused on the subject. . This was shot handheld because I needed to be in the middle of a road in order to line it up and didn’t have time between cars to use a tripod and remote to reduce shake. . The window to get this alignment lasted only a minute or two and I had to reposition for each shot. . For those curious…. Sony a1, Sony 200-600mm lens, 1/320s, ISO 1250. This might be the most adorable I have ever seen a baby opossum look. I know they are very beneficial animals so I appreciate them, but they just aren’t very attractive. . Slightly closer look at the coyote from my previous post. . A coyote in the distance gives me one glance before turning to run after stepping out of the tall grass. . I wish every encounter could be up-close like my bobcat experience this week, but most aren’t. I actually followed a bobcat down this trail but was never closer than 500 yards or so. . And after standing still for several minutes preparing to turn around and head back, something told me to wait 10 more seconds and that’s when this coyote appeared. At first I assumed it was a bobcat but then quickly reassessed. . This is actually the first coyote I have seen in over a dozen years of living in Florida. A bobcat kitten crossing the trail ahead of its mother. . I recently shared a few shots of the mom making her way across the trail and now you can compare he size and build to one of her kittens. . I came back out again this morning with the dream of recreating this magical encounter and immediately saw a bobcat. It was more than half a mile away down the trail walking the wrong direction though. A bobcat kitten strolling through the grass at sunrise. This was the first frame I captured from the encounter I have been posting the last few days. . Swipe to see how easily I could have walked right by and missed it if it had not been moving. The light was absolutely gorgeous at this point but the grass was in the way and the clouds took over before I got my good poses in the clear later. . It turns out I had already missed seeing the rest of the family laying in the grass despite them staring right at me. Their camouflage is elite. . Second version is uncropped and was shot at 600mm, so I was close enough that I should have spotted them. Especially since I was specifically looking for bobcats that morning. Amazing animals. .
