Careful you don’t hurt somebody with all that flash, 2024
72 x 144 x 1.5 in (HxWxD)
photo transfer and acrylic on wood panel
This work includes visual details from 14th century French manuscript and 19th century Korean shaman and folk paintings layered over a group photo portrait including my father. The French manuscript depicts a large banquet featuring King Charles V, flanked by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, and a priest on a boat with a trader standing next to the boat. On the far right is a war scene which is a reenactment of the crusade. This manuscript image depict the power plays by the kings, the colonial expansionist aspirations, and the religious missionary outreach and militarized exploration and trade as tools for colonization. In the foreground a Korean female folk deity rides a dragon and carries a tray of drinks creating a conceptual connection to the French banquet depicted in the background. The group photograph of Korean men overlaid on top is an introduction of real-life depictions of the people the colonial and missionary aspirations were trying to affect.

These two works from my Invisible Women series are on view at NEECHILD gallery until Novembwr 28!
In the Invisible women series, I am presenting a series of found photographs that I found in an abandoned chemistry lab at UC Berkeley over 30 years ago when I was a grad student at UC Berkeley’s MFA program. These photographs featured a series of beautiful women, sister of six, that were photographed traveling both in the US and back in Asia. In the Invisible women series, I am juxtaposing narratives about lost stories and mythologies.

Still Life with Radio, 2024
The photograph at the base of the artwork comes from the my friend’s family album. A photo from the 50’s or the 60’s, her father is leaning into the domestic scene where a lady friend is seated on a chair listening to a radio.
The middle ground image is quoted from an 18th C. wood inlaid design by a British cabinet maker Christopher Wolff who used popular chinoiserie sketches by Francois Boucher. The image depicts an imaginary scene where three Chinese male figures are at play, possibly dancing.
The foreground features a traditional Korean still life, a Chaekgeori painting where stacks of books, imported Chinese porcelain vases, a bowl with pomegranate which represented abundance and fertility, and a bowl with playing pieces for Majong(?), and various flower arrangements. I was also interested in the visual play between the stacks of objects in this Chaekgeori still life and the stacked furniture in the wood inlay image in the background image.
The silver lines trace the figures in the photograph whose presence has been obscured by the overlaying images. The Silver lines bring focus into their presence.
You can see this work in person this week at Art 021 Shanghai! Please check out Zian Gallery booth.

What’s in your love’s eyes

48 x 60 x 1 5/8 in

On view at @newchildgallery
In Phantom Narratives exhibit
Until November 28, 2024
At the base of this work is a European Still life painting that depicts a collection of paintings and various objects of curiosity, many imported from foreign countries.
Overlaid in the middle layer is a found photograph of three Chinese siblings from a photo album I found thirty years ago at an abandoned chemistry lab at UC Berkeley. A Chinese diaspora family whose narratives are compelling and mysterious. The silver line painting traces the three figures in the painting.
The top layer depicts a 19th C. Chaekgeori painting, a traditional Korean still life tradition, which shows a deep connection to the outside world through the objects depicted in the painting.
These multiple narratives in the work interact with each other, weaving a global history about the movement of objects, people, and desire, greed and fantasy.

The promised afterlife, 2024
photo transfer and acrylic on wood panel
On view at @newchildgallery until Nov 28, 2024
The background image is a 17th Century French tapestry depicting the Chinese emperor’s court. Though supposedly a Chinese court depiction actually resembles more of a European in the people’s features, interior decorations and the textures. The blue and white porcelain vases on the top left alludes to the Chinese court, but they were also a very common and popular decorative elements in the European courts.
Over the painting and the photograph is a silver line painting that depicts a very complex Chaekgeori painting, a Korean still life tradition that incorporates many imported objects. The middle layer presents a photographic portrait of a young Korean girl who was sent away as an adoptee overseas. And the top layer at the bottom of the whole painting are vessels used in memorial rituals for the traditional Korean royal rituals to honor deceased kings.
By juxtaposing the objects used in various traditions, I wanted to highlight the many lives of these objects.

I am pleased to share that “Phantom Rooms” opens this Friday at NEWCHILD gallery!
I am presenting five new works made for the exhibit. Inspired by Antwerp’s central role in the international trades and the Dutch Trading company, I created pieces that investigate the movement of objects and peoples, Dutch and Flemish still life paintings and Chaekgeori (Korean Still Life) paintings.
Newchild is pleased to present Phantom Rooms, a group exhibition featuring works by Yoo Geun-Taek, Xi’an Kim, Kyungmi Shin, and Lily Wong. The Newchild team invites you to join them for the opening on Friday, October 18th from 18-21h in the presence of some of the artists. The exhibition will run through November 28, 2024.
