Beirut, 2023.

Got some scans back from the lab and found pictures from my trip to Lebanon last summer. This place has been on my bucket list for very long… so when a Lebanese friend of mine invited me to come I knew I had to take the chance to visit this country. I am super thankful that I got to witness this place with my own eyes 🙏🏼

What is home? It’s been one year since I had this strong urge to let go of the place I called home back then. Last summer I left and sublet my apartment. Since then I have been living on the go with one carry-on suitcase and one backpack (crazy how little you need in the end). A lot of trains, planes, rental cars, Airbnbs, hotels, couches, cabins, friends apartments and sometimes my old room at my parents house. In this last year I have been looking for a new home… but somehow haven’t found it yet. Sometimes that brings so much struggle and restlessness, sometimes it brings so much freedom and joy. For me home became meditating every morning on my mat, laying on the couch while FaceTiming with friends and family, staying in bed on a sunny day, ordering in, knowing that you are always welcome somewhere, being with close friends, having your book next to bed, taking a very long hot shower, continue watching your favorite series right after waking up and many more little moments. I haven’t found my new home yet but I am definitely learning what it needs to feel like 🙏🏼

Very grateful for the last two weeks in Morocco with @josuastaebler 🫶

It’s funny how you always dream of something but you rarely notice when one of your dreams comes true. I remember 6 years ago I dreamed of working as a director on big film sets while traveling the world. I just realized how this dream became true in the last years… but somehow I feel disappointed because now I have new dreams and achieving this old dream feels a bit outdated. It reminds me (as cheesy as this might sound) that it is always about the process and never about achieving the goal. In this spirit: I am trying to enjoy the achievement and I am trying not to immediately start running for my next dreams 🙏🏼✌🏼

From my film archive #6: This short doc is still one of my absolute favorits. The whole thing was a huge experiment. I’ve met Ali, the protagonist, during my travels and I wanted to do a film about him and his stunning attitude towards life. Thats when the idea was born to bring together two strangers from very different parts of the world and make a film about their real encounter. We simply documented what happened in the days after photojournalist Alice Aedy took a single photo of Ali Hayek.

From my film archive #5: This visual love letter to Finland was a commercial for Finlandia. The shoot was super fun since we got the freedom and trust from the client to travel to Lappland for 10 days with a small crew and some toys such as an LED drone, underwater housings and a special snorkel lense. The challenge was to capture all the different seasons (summer, spring, winter) in those 10 days. We got lucky and got everything from a snowstorm to a summery sunset at a lake:)

From my film archive #4: The short doc "Kherou" is the film that jump-started my career. It won gold at the Ciclope Festival and the Clio Awards and was shortlisted in Cannes for the Young Director Award. I came up with the film idea while seeing a photo series by the Swiss photographer Christian Bobst. I remember contacting him immediately and asking if he could get me in touch with some people down there. And he did:) Some weeks later I flew with some rolls of 16mm film, my DoP, and 1st AC to Dakar in Senegal.
