Over the past decade I have frequently found myself behind this beautiful piece of machinery. The craftsmanship and level of precision to which these dollies are made is unparalleled. These dollies are built so well that if we compared them to the auto industry they would be equivalent to that of a Rolls Royce. The shifting of the gears…. along with the calls from the operator “mag left... boom down” they all start to feel very intuitive. With the passing of many years behind this sled, it gets to a point where my intuition is guiding me more often than the camera operators voice. Pushing these sleds has taught me many things about life, and I love looking back at how this piece of machinery has helped me build relationships with some really amazing people. The thing I love the most about being a dolly grip is the present moment awareness required to operate and execute each shot. Translating the Director and DP’s vision from words on paper into a precise movement of the camera is a true art form. I look forward to collaborating with all of you this year to achieve the optimal takes. All this being said, I must take a moment to thank a handful of my dolly grip mentors.
