This December, we will take a deep dive into the world of East Side Story, a 12-volume compilation series of Soul & Doo Wop ballads released throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Many of these songs, along with the imagery on the album covers, are deeply ingrained in Lowrider and Chicano culture. Yet, the history behind these albums has always remained a mystery. @melisduenas began @eastsidestoryproject in 2015 to uncover the obscure origins of the iconic East Side Story series and the real individuals behind the images on these album covers. Driving through East Los Angeles, following leads from social media, or simply bringing the records in her car and finding locations, Dueñas navigated a web of fragmented voices and memories. Her journey led her to discover the original creator, Mr. B, a local record dealer from San Diego who, during the 1970s, created these records for the Latino community that frequented his shop. She also uncovered countless stories rooted in these album covers, stories that have been passed down through generations in the East LA community. With this research she has been working on a book to document these findings, set to release soon. Highlighting Volume 3 & 4, Dueñas will discuss the stories behind these volumes and feature a photo show of archival images of the community and the people behind these two albums. Following with a listening session of both records on the Hi-Fi system. This will be alongside a DJ set by @sleeepwalk, a member of the Los Angeles chapter of @chulitavinylclub, she will be providing us with Sweet Soul Jams & Oldies throughout the night from her personal collection of records. Additionally, a Record Pop-Up by our friends @twelveslb selling all the best curated LP’s, 12s & 45s you need. Lastly, we will be conducting a Lowrider Car Show out front, showcasing the best OG builds. This event is for our community and to celebrate the music that helped raise us and gave us love and strength. What I loved most about marathon training was giving myself permission to step away, to be unreachable, to disappear for hours on end. It didn't matter how I fast I ran, the time alone with my body in motion was always liberating, esp when the pace of the world often feels so overwhelming. Last week when I set out to run the New York marathon, my first marathon ever, I left my phone behind. Deciding instead to focus on being present for and with myself. And even tho I don't have any pics from my run (aside from the official ones), I will tell you I had theeee best time 😭 New York really shows out for the us runners. Thank you NYC 🫶🏽 Shouts to all the kiddos I high-fived, the woman who gave me a Reece's, the Mexican family playin "La Chona," the old rockers covering "I'm just a girl," the DJ who spun "Danger" by the Flirts, the runner who befriended me and calmed my nerves on the ferry, my sister who made the trek to nyc to cheer me on, and all my friends and fam who sent love from afar 🥹 Your support means the world 🫂 Also last but not least, much love to my body for running 26.2 miles and making my goal of finishing sub 5 a reality.🏅 indefinite gratitude to my mind for powering thru all those hours and somehow finding joy in the pain. ❤️‍🔥 every run is truly a blessing #medalmonday #marathonmonday #newyorkmarathon

On @dublab today w the first official installment of my new show 🦋Butterfly Beat🦋 Sharing the decks w LA-based DJ duo @aquienleimporta_la 🔊Tune in from 2-4pm PDT for a dark and vibey mix of italo, disco, electro, and house. ¿A Quién Le Importa?" started off as a monthly night at Footsies bar with an aim to provide a variety of sounds for our fellow LGBTQI+ community, but since, have expanded to other residencies in Los Angeles. Both Chulita Vinyl Club LA members DJ's Extraterrestre ( @annieloren she/her) and Trankis (@lainfinitatristeza they/them) teamed up to explore and share music outside of the white cis-hetero normative spectrum. Some of the genres they focus on are r&b, dark disco, house, post-punk, electro, freestyle, etc.
