Explore the extraordinary stories of stylish Black individuals across art, literature, music, and society.

Coming May 2025, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” will examine the historical and cultural emergence of the Black dandy.

Inspired by curator Monica Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” the exhibition will present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world.

Colman Domingo (@kingofbingo), @LewisHamilton, @ASAPRocky, @Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour will co-chair the next #CostumeInstitute Benefit on the First Monday in May. LeBron James (@kingjames) will serve as honorary chair.

The Benefit, also known as The Met Gala, celebrates the opening of the 2025 exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and provides The Costume Institute with its primary source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations, and capital improvements.

“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” opens to the public on May 10 and will be celebrated at the 2025 Met Gala on May 5. #SuperfineStyle #MetGala2025

We celebrate the life and work of Lorraine O’Grady, who passed away last week at the age of 90.

A groundbreaking artist working at the intersection of race and gender, O’Grady’s prolific career spanned collage, photography, performance, video, and more.

In 2023, we were honored to welcome O’Grady to The Met for a conversation with curator Denise Murrell. Reflecting on works from the @meteuropeanpaintings and @metdrawingsandprints exhibition "Manet/Degas", she explored the enigmatic histories of Manet’s subjects—Laure of Olympia, Jeanne Duval, and Charles Baudelaire—and how Duval’s story, in particular, influenced her artistic practice and resonated in her personal life.

Works by O’Grady are currently on view in "Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876–Now."

Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, a prolific and unconventional draftsman, invited viewers to explore every corner of 18th-century Paris through his remarkable drawings.

Trade cards of that era, the precursors to modern business cards, could also function as advertisements. In this design for a local ironmonger, Saint-Aubin creatively depicts the shop as if its facade has been peeled away, revealing a lively interior scene. Among a jumble of metal grates, light fixtures, and fireplace tools, a flirtatious exchange unfolds between a saleswoman and a male customer.

Marking the 300th anniversary of Saint-Aubin's birth, the exhibition "Paris through the Eyes of Saint-Aubin" offers a glimpse into the pride and aspirations of 18th-century Paris.

On view through February 4, 2025.

🎨 Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (French, 1724–1780). Trade Card for Périer, Ironmonger, 1767. Black chalk, pen and black and brown inks, brush and gray and brown wash.

We’re thrilled to unveil the design for the Oscar L. and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing at The Met! Designed by Mexican architect @fridaescobedo, the wing will provide a new world-class home for our extraordinary collection of 20th and 21st-century art. Set to open in 2030, the new wing will increase gallery space by nearly 50 percent and address important accessibility, infrastructure, and sustainability needs.

Drawing inspiration from the Museum’s architectural legacy, diverse art holdings, and setting within Central Park, Escobedo’s design seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. The Met is the only museum in New York that can display 20th- and 21st-century works alongside art from different centuries and cultures, and these new galleries will bring the modern and contemporary collection into new dialogues with the rest of the Museum.

The Tang Wing will feature iconic views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline year-round from indoor and outdoor spaces, with an expanded Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden on the fourth floor and a new outdoor terrace on the fifth floor. The Tang Wing will be an inclusive, transformative space, reflecting The Met’s commitment to presenting art that speaks to everyone. #MetModern #TangWing
