JAN-JAN VAN ESSCHE - KHAYAL — Opening 7 December

Based on his 2025 Spring-Summer collection, ‘Khayal’, @momuantwerp offers insight into the world of Antwerp fashion designer, @janjanvanessche. The exhibition is an invitation to experience both the past and the future, all in the now.

Garments designed by Van Essche embody a quiet dynamic. His generous approach does not follow the Western tradition of restricting freedom of movement. He offers every body, regardless of gender, age or norms, the space to shape the garment.

Jan-Jan Van Essche has invited members of his own community to share aspects of their lives by way of an associated and varied programme of music, dance and film.

On 6 December, @joachimbadenhorst, @seancarpio, Bert Cools (@granvat), @indre____ Jurgelevičiūtė and @tsubasahori_taiko provide music for the opening night of the exhibition. Tickets at the link in bio.

‘JAN-JAN VAN ESSCHE - KHAYAL’ is on view from 7 December 2024 through 8 June 2025.

This haute couture gem from the MoMu Collection is now on show in 'DIOR – A New Look' at @kunstmuseum.nl.

Designed by #MarcBohan for the fashion house @dior in 1961, this ensemble belonged to Princess Lilian of Belgium. Princess Lilian was a major client of several couture houses, and had good contacts with the House of Dior.

The ensemble is called 'Lettres Persanes', and consists of an evening dress in orange shantung silk worn with a short jacket, with sleeves trimmed with sable and decorated with multicoloured embroidery by Rébé of Paris.

The MoMu Collection has a photocopy of the sketch of the ensemble, with samples of the embroidery on the jacket and a piece of orange velvet from the original design pinned to it.

American Vogue selected this design, worn by model Dorothy McGowan, to illustrate an editorial by Irving Penn.

"I do not like to be photographed or captured physically in any way. Unless the circumstances are unavoidable, I am a real asshole about having my photograph taken. The selfportraits were a practical decision so I could send a magazine or a catalogue or whatever a “picture of me” without involving a photographer. They are also a product of how much time I spend with myself." — Issy Wood

@isywod’s paintings in 'Masquerade, Make-up & Ensor' blend traditional painting techniques with depictions of contemporary consumer objects. Through her work, the artist shares her obsessions with intimacy and interiority, the terrifying side of desire, femininity and complex power dynamics.

Her self-portraits are close up observations of her own troubled self-image. The facial masks and make-up hint at her amusement with such acts of self-care.

See her work through 2 February 2025 at MoMu. Link in bio for tickets.

Did you know that @patmcgrathreal’s fascinating look for @jgalliano’s @maisonmargiela 2024 Spring-Summer ‘Artisanal’ show consists of eight different layers and took her team three years to develop?

Much of her most celebrated work has been part of a long-standing, ongoing collaboration with Galliano. This instantly iconic, hyper-shiny porcelain skin will be remembered for years to come.

As the make-up artist and creative director of Pat McGrath Labs, she is one of the many hair and make-up artists celebrated in ‘Masquerade, Make-up & Ensor’.

The exhibition runs through 2 February 2025. Tickets at the link in our bio.

Face As Canvas: The Artistry of Peter Philips.

Belgian makeup artist Peter Philips began his journey studying fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, surrounded by future fashion visionaries. However, a transformative backstage experience at a fashion show changed his trajectory: “I saw the make-up teams and realized you could make a living out of doing that.” This pivotal moment set him on a different path. Yet, the seeds of his passion were sown earlier—being inspired by old movies and watching his mother and grandmother get ready were formative experiences that shaped his artistic eye and love for beauty.

Philips’ illustrious career spans collaborations with top fashion magazines like Vogue and i-D and work with renowned photographers such as Irving Penn, Willy Vanderperre, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Paolo Roversi. His playful, experimental approach to blending art and fashion led to collaborations with designers like Raf Simons, Junya Watanabe, and Alexander McQueen, for whom he created the iconic overlined red lips in the A/W ’09 show.

His five-year tenure as Creative Director of Chanel’s makeup line firmly established his reputation, paving the way for his current role as Creative and Image Director for Christian Dior Makeup, a position he has held since 2014. Philips has worked on Dries Van Noten shows for over 15 years and collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld for more than two decades. His impact on fashion imagery is significant, particularly through his imaginative use of motifs like Mickey Mouse—most memorably featured in a Raf Simons editorial shot by Willy Vanderperre—which evoke nostalgic, playful associations with childhood.

Currently, Philips’ work is showcased at @momuantwerp as part of the exhibition Masquerade, Make-Up & Ensor. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of collage books created around 2003 by stylist David Vandewal. These books feature collages of Philips’ makeup work interwoven with inspirations from film, music, and art, offering a rare glimpse into his creative process.
