Face As Canvas: The Artistry of Peter Philips.
Belgian makeup artist Peter Philips began his journey studying fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, surrounded by future fashion visionaries. However, a transformative backstage experience at a fashion show changed his trajectory: “I saw the make-up teams and realized you could make a living out of doing that.” This pivotal moment set him on a different path. Yet, the seeds of his passion were sown earlier—being inspired by old movies and watching his mother and grandmother get ready were formative experiences that shaped his artistic eye and love for beauty.
Philips’ illustrious career spans collaborations with top fashion magazines like Vogue and i-D and work with renowned photographers such as Irving Penn, Willy Vanderperre, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Paolo Roversi. His playful, experimental approach to blending art and fashion led to collaborations with designers like Raf Simons, Junya Watanabe, and Alexander McQueen, for whom he created the iconic overlined red lips in the A/W ’09 show.
His five-year tenure as Creative Director of Chanel’s makeup line firmly established his reputation, paving the way for his current role as Creative and Image Director for Christian Dior Makeup, a position he has held since 2014. Philips has worked on Dries Van Noten shows for over 15 years and collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld for more than two decades. His impact on fashion imagery is significant, particularly through his imaginative use of motifs like Mickey Mouse—most memorably featured in a Raf Simons editorial shot by Willy Vanderperre—which evoke nostalgic, playful associations with childhood.
Currently, Philips’ work is showcased at
@momuantwerp as part of the exhibition Masquerade, Make-Up & Ensor. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of collage books created around 2003 by stylist David Vandewal. These books feature collages of Philips’ makeup work interwoven with inspirations from film, music, and art, offering a rare glimpse into his creative process.
