🙏🙏🙏 Thanks to @raoulfilm for a great takeover with @negativelabpro!!! To close, we asked Raoul wha was next for him as a photographer:
•
"My goal is to create a Magazine full with my favorite photos. I’m so hyped up about this project that it will also take me a while to get everything together. It should be an affordable piece for everyone as an inspiration or just a nice and aesthetic Zine to look at."
•
Can't wait to see that, Raoul! If you haven't yet, be sure to follow @raoulfilm! 🙌

🤯 Another mind-blowing shot from @raoulfilm! The warmth and richness here really showcases what's possible with film!
•
Today, Raoul shares his "Desert Island" film setup: one camera, one lens, one film.

"Oh definitely the Minolta XD7, packed with the 50mm f1.4, loaded with Kodak Portra 400. This setup has never let me down and the way Portra 400 renders color is just my absolute favorite. With its great versatility it will always be my go-to setup."

Great choices! 👍

😍 Love the clean composition and warm tones in this shot from @raoulfilm. Here is what he had to say about his creative process and inspiration:
•
"I mostly have a vision in my head before I go out shooting on purpose. Typically, it’s the simple things what inspires me at first such as a nice sunset or a nice scene I’ve seen before when I didn’t have a cam with me. Then when I’m outside, I always find different compositions which weren’t in my head before. I love the colors which film produces, so I always look for aesthetic color palettes in my shots."
•
Inspiration has such a huge impact for me in photography. I get the most inspiration from the following photographers.
•
Fred Herzog
William Eggleston
Vivian Meier
Willem Verbeeck (@willemverb)
Jake Inez (@jakeinez)

🔥Day 3! 🔥 Today @raoulfilm shares his scanning equipment, setup, and workflow for digitizing his film:
•
"I have different setups for 35mm and 120 film.
•
For 35mm film I’m using the Sony A7 with a Minolta 50mm f3.5 macro (1:1) to scan my negatives. It includes a Bresser copy stand, a Kaiser slimlight plano light table and the Essential Film Holder (EFH). I upgraded the setup from time to time and at this point I’m finally 100% satisfied with it.
•
When the film is in the Essential Film Holder, I double-check the focus on the film grain. Then I shoot the negatives on the Sony as RAW in A-priority (EV +1) at f/8 (sweet-spot DOF of the lens) and ISO 100. I import then all my shots into Lightroom Classic on Windows.
Picking the white-balance from the film border and apply it on all shots from the same roll. Select all and open Negative Lab Pro Set Source: Digital Camera, Color Model: Frontier, Pre-Saturation: 3-default and convert!
•
For 120 film I’m using the Epson V600 and for me it’s a really good tool, especially for medium format. I scan with Silverfast 8 as a Positive (48-bit DNG) and convert them with Negative Lab Pro.
•
In Negative Lab Pro, my most used tone profile is “Linear” or “Cinematic-log" because they’re giving me softer colors and a flatter image overall. The rest of the settings are always depending on the shot but overall, it’s less contrast, less highlights, more Darks and that’s it!"
•
Awesome! Thanks for giving us an inside look, @raoulfilm!

Day 2 with @raoulfilm 😍 Today, Raoul shares his journey with #filmphotography
•
"I began with photography in 2018 with my first digital camera and my shooting style constantly changed from time to time. In my latest digital times I totally was into the “film look”.
•
On my birthday in 2019 my girlfriend surprised me with a film camera and I was like - what’s this? How do I insert the roll of film now? How can I see the results? I really had no clue. At this moment I was so hooked I wanted to explore everything about film photography in a minute!
•
Since then I am using my digital camera only for scanning my negatives, sorry Sony! The reason for that is, I love the whole process. The slowed down shooting experience, developing, scanning and holding the negatives in my hands. It feels like a creation that can't be ever destroyed.
•

Wow! A BIG "thank you" to @nev.in.color for such a great takeover week! 🙏 To close out, we asked him what was next in his photography journey...
•
"I am currently working on my first photobook. This project will probably take me until the end of the year. I’m aiming to have it completed and shipped for the holidays this year. I am always looking to be out shooting. It's truly my passion, and I’m always trying to improve/grow as a photographer and person. I’m thankful for the opportunity to speak to my workflow and photography. I’m hoping that this helps others with some workflow or conceptual questions. I’m also more than happy to answer any questions anyone may have. When I got into film, there were so many helpful folks…I want to repay that kindness to anyone who may be interested in diving into film!"
•
Thanks @nev.in.color for your willingness to help out the film community! We've loved learning more about how you approach film photography and wish you much success!

Day 5 🎉 - @nev.in.color shares some tips to building a more aesthetically pleasing Instagram feed!
•
"Everyone’s style and subject matter are different, but I can speak to what my thought process is with my IG feed. I personally like to add borders to my shots. It acts as a sort of “digital mat” if you will. You would mat a photo that is hanging in a gallery, the borders act as a digital mat to separate the photo from the rest of the images on your phone as you scroll. It also creates a nice gallery look to the feed when looking at it as a whole. I think it also allows for a bit more diversity in the feed while allowing one to keep a cohesive look to it. One thing I will say is, don’t allow the pressure of keeping an aesthetic on your IG feed keep you from shooting or posting what feels right to you. Photography is much more than just social media!"
•
What do you think? Borders or no borders? How do you like to add your borders? Later today, I'll add a story showing a simple technique to automatically add borders in Lightroom if you are interested?

🔥 Day 4 🔥 - Today, @nev.in.color is sharing his equipment and workflow for getting these amazing tones and colors...
.
"My process is the same with all my film photos.
1) I use an Epson V550 and scan them as if they were "positive" in EpsonScan.
2) Then, I bring them into Lightroom and convert them with Negative Lab Pro. That does 95% of the work for me!
3) Inside NLP, I like to have the highlights slider at -10 or -15 to show off more of the sky. I'll also cycle through the "Tone Profiles" and make other adjustments for the individual shot.
4) If I need to make tweaks beyond that, I'll just make a "positive copy" so I can directly edit it in Lightroom. For instance, sometimes I like to boost the saturation by 5 or use the HSL panel to adjust the balance between cyan and blue.
And that's it!
.
Thanks for sharing, @nev.in.color!

Day 3 🙌 - Today @nev.in.color shares insight on his shooting process:
.
"When I go out to shoot, most times I have a specific place I am looking to capture. I make sure the weather is clear and I am in the right place at the right time. As for what I am looking to capture, this is dependent on what I am shooting…or better yet, *when* I am shooting. Sunrise/sunset the goal is always to capture the colors of the sky. So I am extra cognizant of what my settings are so I can be sure to capture the colors and evenly expose my photos. Mid-day light I am aiming for pastel colors. This is mostly achieved through over-exposing color negative film."
.
Great insight! I see a lot of negative where photographers do the opposite - overexposing sunrise/sunset and underexposing bright mid-day scenes. Getting great tones from film really begins with how you expose it! Tomorrow, @nev.in.color will share more about his digitization process, so stick around!

🔥 Day 2 of the @nev.in.color takeover! 🔥 Today, Nevin shares his journey with #filmphotography:
.
"When I picked up photography, I started with a digital camera. I found myself editing my photography to look like the colors and tones I saw on film. I decided to take the leap and pick up analog photography. I was instantly (well after they were developed 😉) hooked!
.
The whole process keeps me coming back to film. It’s a lesson in patience and delayed gratification. It helps me stay in the moment and be more deliberate with my photography. The end result is always more satisfying for me personally. I think the added effort and overall time invested into every single shot on film makes it all the more gratifying. "
.
Love it! Thank you, @nev.in.color! 🙏
