This spring we collaborated with Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF) – Scandinavia's longest-running art biennial to develop a visual identity for LIAF 2024. The festival, titled 'SPARKS' was curated by @feilkjersti, explored the groundbreaking 1861 Lofoten Line – Norway's first telegraph network that united nine fishing villages across 170 km, enabling vital storm warnings and fish tracking. Our identity draws inspiration from historical communication technology, weaving together the movement of communication with Morse code. The visual identity creates a network of graphic elements that continuously expands with more content throughout the festival's duration. We experimented by making a small (web)tool for the team at @lofotenliaf to quickly generate posts for their social media. Using this tool, they can export randomly positioned media (both static images and short clips) via their web-browser. This week the first Olden Summer Residency is taking place, located at the inner tip of Norfjord and the base of the Jostedal glacier. Settling into a cluster of cabins, boathouses, communal long tables and kitchens are our first residents - antiquarian horologist and clockmaker Andrew Strangeway (UK), cultural producer Carmen Ho (UK), industrial designer Marianne Skarbøvik (NO) and graphic designer Bjørnar Pedersen (NO). In the following days, their individual and collective explorations will be guided by this year’s theme of “looking back.” Between workshops they will be visiting significant sites of craft, design, and architecture to connect their practices to the local history, culture and environment of Olden, generating new perspectives and context around the theme. We invite you also to change your orientation from present to past, to join us in this “looking back.” We hope this week will give us an escape, a pause, a step back from the present, to reacquaint ourselves with the origin of our practices, and ultimately to give our engagement with them greater depth and clarity.
