To no surprise culling from 20 years of work and curating the most representative version of you as an artists is daunting. Navigating old versions of yourself and how they relate to you currently is a mind fuck to say the least. Finally getting to a place I feel good about for my website relaunch all while trying to keep mentally sound during whatever wild times we continue to live in. Thanks all for the support and appreciation of my work (ready for some new connections and collaborations so please reach out!) The two most loveliest gentlemen, @diegoluna_ & @gaelgarciab for @nytimes out last week. Thanks to my fave @chantar for the assist and making it work when natural light drastically changed the minute we started shooting. Glad I stuck to my gut, only shooting film for the few minutes I had with them separately. More recent shoots to share soon when I escape my archive/website update bunker I’ve been in for weeks. As I continue my backend website updating (after a blip of both my domain and email being down for a few days) I’m finalizing a lot of imagery that won’t make the final edit so I’m sharing some here. I always like sharing imagery that’s indicative of how I’m currently feeling anyway. Have some recent commissions to share but am waiting til they are on my site. The kind, inviting and absurdly talented @rebeccahall photographed at her home, for the cover of this past weekend’s @fthtsi magazine. When I started doing editorial work, this is how I imagined most of my shoots would be. Spending a few hours at someone’s home, forming a connection while creating. No styling, no hair and makeup - just a shared moment of intimacy. Unfortunately, most of the time, that’s not the case. Grateful to Rebecca for her generosity of time and being present with me. “Simple” will always be my favorite work. Thanks to @katiefcwebb for the assignment.

Mentally, this year has been especially challenging for me professionally which is par for the course as an artist. Doubt and shame weasel into the periods when I’m not working. Wondering if I’m respected and appreciated as much as my peers and by them, reverberates in the background on a daily basis. The mind can be a messy place (the internet certainly is) and comparison is rarely worthy of our energy. Taking stock of that all, I’ve spent a lot of time being insular as of late - Reflecting and writing while also really sitting with my work. Color palette has always been a driving theme in my work and I’ve spent a lot of time recently refining it. It’s helping me stay grounded and its clearing the brain fog. Looking forward to new collaborations and connections this fall as well as a big website update in the next few weeks. In the meantime, here are some portraits I finally worked on that I truly love. x ryan
