Recently I have been getting more involved with composing music for commercials, and I was given a shot by director Kevin Lim from @elasticgroupau on their new advertising campaign for @busstopfilms.
Bus Stop Films is a not for profit that advocates, educates, creates and facilitates opportunities both in front of and behind the screen for people with intellectual disability.
I connected immediately with the commercial, which tells a story of a young boy who dreams of creating films but needs to find a tribe that will help him. The team felt that the commercial called for music that is nostalgic, uplifting, triumphant, and tender, which I gladly provided.
Thank you for giving me a shot elastic studios and Bus Stop Films! It’s a wonderful commercial, and I’m proud to have contributed to something that can make such a difference to people’s lives.

We just kicked off our Speaker Series with the amazing @Samredfernmusic. 🎵🏆 The award-winning film music composer shared his secrets on what makes a film truly resonate. 🎞️👁️
1️⃣ First up, he dived into Human Needs and Dramatic Stakes. 🧐💡 Sam believes that films hit home when they mirror our own experiences, focusing on:
🤝 Unity
🛠️ Certainty
🌈 Variety
🌟 Self Significance
It's all about characters battling stakes that reflect these core human needs. Movies missing this? They just don't cut it. 😕🎥
2️⃣ Next, he explored the 8 Sequence Storytelling technique. 📖 This method breaks down a protagonist's journey into 32 plot points across 8 sequences, showcasing their evolution and change. 💭
🦸♂️ Protagonist and it’s virtues
😩 Issues arising from their aversion
🧪 Attainment of an elixir
🆕 integration and creation of a new status quo
✨ Sam’s approach isn't just about crafting stories; it's about triggering self-reflection and growth. 🤔💫 His keynote, complete with scene examples and a story pitch, left us all inspired and ready for more! 🙌🎞️
Want to go deeper? Reach out to him!

At @filmmakersandmovienerds recent Speaker Series, I gave a 2 hour keynote on storytelling. I identified two main pillars of storytelling theory to tackle the question of why some films feel unsubstantial.
I am an Award Winning Film Music Composer of Short and Feature films with distribution on platforms such as Sky, Apple TV and Amazon Prime as well as being officially selected in over 40 International and Academy Award Qualifying Film Festivals.
As a composer, it is my job to clarify story with music. My keynote offered concepts based on my studies of Story Theory, Screenwriting and the Cognitive Sciences to an audience of directors, cinematographers, screenwriters, actors, producers and the like.
Firstly, I explored the connection between Human Needs and Dramatic Stakes that matter. I posited that significant stakes are those mirroring the audience's own life experiences. I identified four pivotal Human Needs:
1: Unity - the need to belong to a social group, to feel connected with others.
2: Certainty - the need for order and planning
3: Variety - the need for freedom, exploration, liberation
4: Self Significance - the need for identity and individuality
Characters on screen grappling with stakes rooted in the tension between these needs resonate subconsciously with viewers, offering a relatable journey and a philosophy for life. Films lacking this kind of subtext feel unsubstantial to audiences.
In the second part of my keynote, I delved into the relationship between 8 Sequence Storytelling and the psychology of change. I outlined 32 plot points across 8 sequences, charting the protagonist's evolution of:
1: Demonstrating the fixation of a protagonist and its virtues.
2: The issues that are arising from their aversion.
3: The attainment of an elixir, which is an understanding of where life’s problems have been coming from and a way to confront them in a way not mentally possible before.
4: The integration of the elixir to form a new status quo.
I feel that the keynote garnered a positive response, not only for providing a framework for compelling narrative but also prompting introspection from the audience. Thank you to everyone who came!

A Sci Fi audio drama I compose music for called The Sojourn has just had an exciting development. We’re going to be streaming on Nebula! Our hope is that if all goes well, The Sojourn could be Nebula’s flagship fiction series.
The Sojourn is an award winning audio drama featuring a full cast of veteran voice actors, including The Expanse’s Martin Roach, God of War: Ragnarok’s Ben Prendergast and voice of Nintendo’s Princess Rosalina, Laura Faye Smith.

A clip from B-Side: Conversations with a Motown Engineer as featured on my reel. Check out the rest of my music to picture reel at samredfermusic.caard.co in the Overview section. Link in bio.
My work with director @bretmiller_filmmaker had typically been within the Horror Genre, so it was quite a change of pace when he called me about doing a Motown Project. I had not made Motown music before, but after researching the genre and the production behind it, I felt inspired and I came up with a plan for how I was going to pull it off.
This short documentary covers the music of @motownrecords but also the social themes that contextualised Detroit and Motown as well as the challenges of sight impairment that Motown Engineer, Steve Smith, developed later in life.
