“I was surprised when I started putting images aside to do a book on birds, at the request of the publisher Atelier EXB. I must have taken over 1,200 photos of birds and yet I never treated them as a single subject, as a whole. And yet I love birds, I think they’re magnificent. This book project has allowed me to rediscover many of my images, and more than half of those published are previously unseen. For weeks I could think of nothing but birds, and the more I found, the more I thought there must be other photos I’d taken somewhere in the world. It was a shock for me when all the prints were piled up.”

Dear friends, I would like to draw your attention to the need for solidarity with the people of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), especially the city of Porto Alegre. I think we are living through the first major ecological catastrophe linked to global warming. Today, we have a city flooded by water. Porto Alegre is a low-lying city, close to the coast, which is being flooded by the waters of a river, in rains that have never existed like this in this region. Possibly a large city will have to be moved and rebuilt on higher ground. This is a wake-up call for the entire planet, which has several cities that are more or less in the same situation. But in this moment we need the solidarity of everyone in Brazil and across the planet for a people who are suffering, and suffering badly.

* you can find many links to make donations on the internet, every help is precious.

Until 16 March, it is possible to see 15 of Sebastião Salgado’s platinum-palladium prints at the Polka Gallery in Paris, all made at Georges Charlier’s Salto Ulbeek laboratory in Belgium. Created by William Willis in 1873, the platinum-palladium technique differs from silver gelatine printing in its wide range of tones, its powerful grey scales and its ability to reproduce three-dimensional shapes and light with finesse. Using scanned negatives or raw digital files in very high definition, the teams at the Salto Ulbeek laboratory divide the tonal range of each image into three analogue negatives. They are then combined to produce exceptional prints on 100% cotton Arches paper, specially formatted to receive several layers of platinum-palladium: two rare and precious metals, more stable than gold and known for their absolute inalterability.

My first photographic story in the Amazon was made in 1983, to report on deforestation. Since then, I've returned to this "green continent" several times, in a mixture of constant amazement at the endless discovery of this immense forest - with its rivers, mountains and indigenous peoples - and deep sadness at the growing destruction of this important ecosystem for the planet. According to the latest study carried out by MapBiomas - a collaborative network made up of NGOs, universities and tech start-ups - Brazil lost 96 million hectares of native vegetation between 1985 and 2022, the equivalent of 2.5 times the surface area of Germany. The region most affected was the Amazon, with a 13 per cent loss, corresponding to 52 million hectares, almost the size of France. At least we have so far managed to preserve indigenous lands, which have seen less than 1% devastation during this period. Today, September 5th, is “Amazon Day”, but we need to realise that every day should be dedicated to protecting this world heritage that is the Amazon and its native peoples.

In 1978, I made a work documentary on la Cité des 4000, a group of huge apartment blocks in La Courneuve, in Seine-Saint-Denis, in the Paris suburbs. During the three months I spent there, I often slept in people's homes to avoid going home when I stayed late into the night. This also enabled me to live as close as possible to the local people. I can knock on any door and the residents are always welcoming. I'm an immigrant myself, who doesn't speak perfect French, so that helps me to be accepted. I understand what many people are going through. I feel at home. The locals invite me into their homes for family celebrations and weddings. My camera is not a problem. Recently, I went back into my archives to dig out some images from that time. It's almost an anthropological look at the place. What was lacking there was above all integration. The mission of the French state was to help, accompany and provide assistance to this population who were left to their own, in order to integrate them into society. It failed to do so. Worse still, it ignored its children. Where do you want all these young people whose parents are immigrants to go? They have nowhere else to go, and for good reason: they were born in France.

World Photography Day
August 19th

Photography is my idiom, the language through which I express myself. Many people say to me: "Sebastião, you see so many interesting things on the planet, you have the opportunity to visit incredible places, you must write about it". I reply that I already write with photography. It is a language of permanent search, of immense depth and something that you cannot define a priori. All the variables that will constitute the reality that you will materialise in an image are not known in advance. None. Be it difficulties that arise along the way, the weather conditions, the reactions of the people you accompany. It's a language made up of all the surroundings for its materialisation. And besides, when I take a photo, I am making an intervention with all my cultural, human and relational heritage. It is my life, my personality, my way of seeing the world, of presenting myself in the face of what I am photographing. Photography is done in a fraction of a second, but it takes a lifetime to realise it.

I arrived in France with Lélia, my wife, at the end of the 1960s as an exiled person, fleeing the system of deep repression that existed at the time in Brazil. Soon afterwards, the Brazilian military dictatorship withdrew our passports and we had to file an injunction to get them back. We became refugees here in France, and then immigrants. When I did a piece of work on refugees and immigrants, I already knew this story, in my own way I had lived it. For years, I had been looking for people who had been displaced from their place of origin and were in transit, looking for another point of stability. They left either for economic reasons, climate change or because of conflict. I realised a body of work called “Exodus". In reality, I was photographing a part of my own life, portrayed in other people, some of them in slightly better situations than I had, and the vast majority in much worse conditions. It was a very important moment in my life, of identifying with these people, and of feeling deeply what I was photographing.

Lélia Wanick Salgado, who for 25 years has been dedicated to reforestation and the recovery of ecosystems in the Atlantic Forest, in Brazil, was one of the winners of the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity 2023. The result of the prize was announced recently in Lisbon at a ceremony attended by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, president of the jury.
Lélia, responsible for the curation and scenography of Sebastião Salgado's photo exhibitions, as well as the editing and design of his books, created in 1998, together with him, the Instituto Terra. The organization is dedicated to restoring degraded forest areas and promoting sustainable rural development in the Rio Doce valley, a region that covers municipalities in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
“So far we have planted almost 3 million trees of native species, reviving biodiversity in the remarkable biome to which we belong. We have also created one of the largest water recovery programmes to date, Olhos d’Água. Working with thousands of farmers, we have planted small woods on their land to revive dormant springs. This may seem modest in face of the global challenge, but it is significant in the context of today’s needs. The Instituto Terra is concrete proof that together we can still save our planet”, says Lélia.

The exhibition "Amazônia", with photos by Sebastião Salgado and curatorship and scenography by Lélia Wanick Salgado, is currently on show in Milano (Italy), at La Fabbrica del Vapore, until November 19, and in Zürich (Switzerland), at MAAG, until September 24. The next stage will be in Madrid (Spain), at the Fernán Gómez-Centro Cultural de la Villa space, opening to the public on September 13.
“In the 1980s, and also in 1998, I had been reporting on endangered populations with the organization Médecins sans Frontières in three regions of the Amazon, and I began to realize that these areas were being devastated. As a Brazilian, I thought I had to do a story about the Amazon, because we were losing it. I dedicated seven years to this project. ‘Amazônia’ is a huge photographic project, but also a testimony that I want to bring to life”, says Sebastião Salgado.
So far, the exhibition has registered 1.4 million visitors on its international tour.

In 25 years, much has been transformed with the restoration of the rainforest. With work and dedication, @institutoterraoficial has already planted more than 2,5 million native trees and today we have a lush forest, full of life, that is home to hundreds of animal and plant species.

As we witness the catastrophic effects of climate change, we intensify the recovery of springs, promote environmental education for children and youth, and are now changing the reality in the Doce River valley. We still have a long way to go, much to restore and recover from what has been lost, but it is possible with the help of hundreds of friends, partners, and collaborators. #ReforestToTransform

#ReflorestarParaTransformar
