V Håkonsen 2
Acrylic on board
60 x 90 cm
This is the second piece I’ve completed on Vendela. I didn’t spend a lot of time on it but probably felt the happiest doing it. The points of reference was really only Cezanne’s The Gardener and favourite sound pieces of Vendela’s. I just tried to be loose with this one and focused on enjoying the effect of acrylic on unprimed board. I was trying to capture the very natural energy that’s present in reflex. This is based off a picture of Vendela that I took after she won silver in last years Taekwondo student national championship. She told me it was the happiest she’d ever been after a fight. I tried to draw attention in the way I painted the armour while barely detailing explicit elements like the medal or sparring hall.

1. ‘Mirrors in Karachi’
3ft x 3ft
Acrylic and oil on canvas
Is the 1st in the series of Shahrez’s portraits. For a portrait, it is a lot of landscape. With any of the portraits I’m doing, they’re portraits of an aspect of a sitter’s identity. For each person, I gather all the information I’m interested in into research files for them. Shahrez is my best friend, but he’s also my oldest true friend and the only one of them from back home. This is based on a picture of him I took at the beach in 2020 right before the pandemic hit. I had a really fun time with this piece because I’m really interested in turbulence in water and spent my whole year last year making an attempt at exploring it in paint. But this time I got to put that brushwork to use on the physical imprint it left on this rock bed. Enquiring about this process of formation felt like it deepened my appreciation for the way Shahrez has protected and nurtured his identity as I’ve seen it while growing up in our country which often makes it so difficult to do. The artist references for this piece were all favourites of his! (except Bonnard) and aligned so well with what is already my practice.
Anyway, come to my degree show !!!
