… the song Sleeping On The Roof is the last song on The Soft Bulletin but it actually was the very very first thing we did that we knew would be part of ( what would end up being ) The Soft Bulletin. Steven did a four-track recording in the Spring of 1996.. we used this recording ( along with about 20 minutes of freaky sound affects ) in the very first Parking Lot Experiment. It’s title , back then , was Sleeping On The Roof: Should We Keep The Severed Head Awake … the idea was based on one night ( at the house I still live in now) our air conditioner went down ( in the middle of a hot Oklahoma summer) and we decided to sleep outside ( thinking it would we slightly cooler than sleeping in the stuffy house) up on the roof ( our house has a flat roof and you can walk out the upstairs windows and be right on the roof) .. it was an interesting night .. I didn’t really sleep for all the ruckus the outdoors makes throughout the night.. there were insects ( mostly mosquitoes) buzzing around my head all night .. there were endless dogs barking a few helicopters and loud motorcycles and , early in the morning just as the sun was coming up a man with Tourette’s Syndrome walked through the neighborhood cussing at the top of his voice ( I noticed, after that, he walked to work every morning) and later about 8:00 a series of hot-air balloons went right over the house ( amazing timing ) ..all this stuff was incorporated into this 20 minute long experimental piece of music we used at the very first Parking Lot Experiment.. the freaky voices and giant insect sounds and the distorted barking dogs stuff was all very fun and exciting to play with inside of this abstract sad melody that Steven had come up with.. and .. in time.. we would get rid of most of the Soundeffects and just have what you hear at the end of the record the way it is now.. Knowing that we had this strange little instrumental showing us a new way forward .. gave us great confidence.. this little piece of music encapsulates the theme of the Soft Bulletin.. it’s bleak and resigned but also comforting.. it somehow is hopeless and hopeful at the same time..
