In M?n Mad With Fear Reconciliation of the Source After Courbet (2021), @harrygouldharveyiv draws on two iconic works by Gustave Courbet: The Source (1852) and The Man Made Mad with Fear (1843).

Harvey’s fascination with French realism and its exploration of the human condition is evident in the red and black abstract patterns, which evoke stained glass windows and create an optical, prism-like effect. Born and raised in Fall River, MA, Harvey’s work is deeply rooted in the ecological and industrial history of the South Coast region. Using materials sourced from fallen trees, ruined Gilded Age mansions, abandoned factories, and Gothic churches, Harvey crafts mystical, diagrammatic drawings set in reliquary-like hand-built frames. His large-scale sculptural installations reflect on the lost histories of marginalized artisans and the grueling labor underpinning American industry and luxury.

“In these painting-adjacent objects, appropriated images sourced from online subcultures gain an infectious and seductive plasticity through the transfer process, thanks to the layering of mute acetate, epoxy resin, and plexiglass and the artist’s framing of these reconfigured components.”
“There is a cuteness to this body of works, though they tend to be documentation and condensation of the symbolic violence inherent to consuming digital interfaces.” - @dionysus.in.modernity on @tianyisun_’s work

Tianyi Sun explores the re-creation of embodied experience and its inevitable failure. Through interweaving painting, sculpture, time-based media, poetry, and software, she composes responsive environments to excavate the affects of technology. Her work examines digital interfaces, communication systems, archival structures, and physical architecture as concurrent networks of power. Within these systems, she locates subjectivity, memory, and the body as processes in flux, oscillating between states of precariousness and preservation, public and private, reality and simulation.

“During the long process of weaving fishing nets with my mother’s help, I became familiar with the silk threads, which eventually led me to start creating embroidery works.” - Wang Ye @satelitever
This journey inspired “Catch the Light in a Net,” a Hunan-style embroidery piece resembling a fish net—a collaborative creation between Wang Ye and his mother.

Wang Ye was born in Changsha (China) in 1991. He graduated from the Design Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2013 in Beijing. In 2017, Wang Ye graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts from the Sculpture Department of Yale University School of Art. Ye works in multi-media projects that combine video, sculpture, handicraft, and installation. The artist learned traditional fishing net knitting from his hometown. Currently, he is studying the Hunan Embroidery technique. Ye draws inspiration from folk art as cultural heritage often reveals how aesthetic and value form and evolve.

DM or email us to learn more about Wang Ye’s practice.

“They say: Much is lost in translation. Other things are gained. And yet others are, like Gong Xiaowen, caught in between—neither this nor that, here nor there, us nor them.”  –Robert Morris Levine

Gong explores diasporic experiences through the preservation of collective memories underlain in mundane objects, fostering a sense of belonging amidst displaced contexts in the lens of culture and historical traditions. Her sculptures and installations, often combining ready-made, sound,  metal casting and ephemeral materials, intentionally defamiliarize and recalibrate behaviors associated with customs and rituals, reconstructing identity and authenticity as lineages in flux.

I try to render truths in drawings and carve frames from wood forged from these lands and these properties in Fall River. — Harry Gould Harvey @harrygouldharveyiv

In Lobelia Lover Specialize Pollinator (2023), Harvey reimagines the angel from Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia I (1514), dropping a yolk filled with red and blue lobelia—symbols of love, beauty, and healing. Carved vines along the frame echo Harvey’s signature use of natural forms and reclaimed materials, inspired by the history and ecology of his native Fall River, MA.

“I’m trying to capture innocence when it becomes not innocent anymore.”

We’re honored that Xingzi Gu @__sing.zi joined both StillShow by Stilllife Shanghai and NYC this year. Tinged with a quiet melancholy, Xingzi’s work captures intimacy and relationality, weaving sentimentalism and storytelling through layered brushstrokes. Figures blur and dissolve into backgrounds, inviting open-ended interpretations and a profound engagement with memory and emotion.

“The artist’s viewpoint is not invalidated with us like it often is in the silo of a technological, bureaucratic realm.” — Brittni Ann Harvey

We’re honored to have Brittni Ann Harvey @brittniannharvey join StillShow by Stilllife this year. Harvey’s practice delves into the intersections of craft and technology, drawing from Gothic and Proto-Renaissance imagery to create works that navigate themes of spirituality, technological advancement, and material histories. Her use of embroidery, fabric, and sculptural elements transforms traditional techniques into bold contemporary statements.

It’s been a week since we closed StillShow by Stilllife Shanghai and we’re excited to bring you back with artwork spotlights, starting with @alice_gong_xiaowen’s 2019 sculpture, “flour + water.”

We’re honored that Alice Gong Xiaowen joined both StillShow by Stilllife Shanghai and NYC this year. In Alice Gong Xiaowen’s practice, material translations of matter and haptic memories imagine the collapse and reconfiguration of object-hood. She is drawn to processes of indexing as meditations on anticipating loss as it allows action to have a hand in mitigating that which is continuously becoming distant, disintegrating, slipping, yet anew. Translation helps lay to witness, stills from an exhaustive effort to hold onto that which is constantly in a stage of atrophy—to make relics from fugitive personal and cultural memory remnants that are no longer exercised via a reconjuring of memory through sound, texture, and impression.

DM or email us to learn more about Alice Gong Xiaowen’s practice.
