2 years, to the lunar hour, since their last performance in New York City, @sunkenlivingroom is obliged and partially enthused to present the inimitable Deidre & the Doc (@deidremusic x @pfrrmusic) on Sunday Dec 8th @sleepwalk.nyc. But the question remains, where have they been, what have they been doing and did Doc ever deal with that pile of outstanding parking violations?? Well no, but that’s not important. Deidre has been finishing her 7th attempt at her 4th memoir and Doc has been napping and occasionally moonlighting as a drunk clown mechanic named “Leon” (someone who modifies normal cars to fit 20-40 people)... he never does finish one, too drunk.. Anywho, catch this force of nature shock and inspire with their stripped-down guitar-organ cover set of melodramatic oldies.
Stay for incredible sets by @daniel_kleederman and @damondaunno. Maybe even stay to dance to special DJ sets from @pfrrmusic and the rare and transcendent DJ Sneaky Pizza. This will be one for the ages.

‘Past Life’: last song I wrote, first song I released 🍂
A little engine that could, fueled by the creative momentum of my treasured collaborator @deidremusic, this groovy pop tune ended up creating a meaningful framework for the other folkier songs on the EP. It speaks about the past and the present blending together, and the confusion and wonder that can happen when we start to accept that life rarely moves in a straight line.
Can’t wait to play it for you at our EP release party at @sleepwalk.nyc on October 18!
I’ll be joined by @deidremusic & @damondaunno … don’t miss this special show!

🔮Making the song: Writing🔮
Past Life was written in one or two sessions with my dear friend and producer, @deidremusic . The first thing she said to me when I came in was: what kinds of songs do you need in your live set? I thought that was such a useful way to start getting ideas bouncing around. I her I needed more up-tempo jams. 🤘🏼
We started with me playing her a couple of snippets of ideas I had. One was a pretty melancholy idea about sitting at a bar and watching everyone around you get younger and younger, semi-inspired by @sharonvanhalen ’s “Seventeen” — the idea that old familiar places stay the same while you keep changing. Deidre is a brilliant co-writer because she pushes her collaborators to get specific about the story they want to tell through the visuals in the lyrics; what is the central idea/theme/event? Where are we? What is the atmosphere? Who is this character who is singing? It was inspiring for me because it totally resonates from an acting perspective as well.
At some point, we got into the idea of a past life, and Deidre started laying down a basic structure for the first half of the chorus with that repetition “maybe in a past life”, “maybe in another time”. From there it was about setting the scene in the verses and bringing the listener through this wild ride of recognizing someone but not being able to place them: both the magic of that, and the unsettling feeling of that.
As the song started to solidify, I began interpreting it not just as a story about meeting someone in a bar, but also about meeting a former version of myself, in a kind of mystical way.
I can’t wait to share the finished product with you!
