I don’t really know how to approach the topic of encountering racism at such a young age, especially when I wasn’t aware of what racism is and how it’s something that no doubt affected me mentally whilst growing up. Should I touch on the racist abuse that’s been shouted at me as an adult, the threats of violence toward me from across a street, or stick to the racism I encountered in the playground and from teachers? would that be too much for a kids book?.. It’s one of those things that we HAVE to teach our kids about. I mean, Simran is 9 now and we’ve been researching high schools. One thing his white friends’ parents will never have to do is figure out how racist a school is and what level of racism their ‘zero tolerance policy’ actually tolerates- they will never be affected by it. But for us, there are certain schools we know that simply do not understand what racism is, so how could they possibly prevent or support our boys when it eventually happens?.. anyway, all these thoughts play on my mind and I think it’s only best that I try to do what I can - as I have been on TikTok, here, my mission to increase Sikh presence on tv/film, and now in kids books. Thank you for this article @watchintheknow My @tiktok journey has been amazing. It’s been liberating to express myself, share my culture, and create content that my children can learn from in years to come. It’s important to me that boys will find comfort in hearing my voice and seeing my face long after I’m gone - and if I can make a positive impact too, then that’s all good. What I recognised along this journey is: 1) there isn’t enough representation of people that look like me or my kids in tv, film, media. The same as when I grew up. 2) A large majority of people still don’t know who a Sikh is or what Sikhs represent, and many people are afraid to ask questions. This is perpetuated by a huge lack of education often resulting in bullying in schools and racism in workplaces. 3) I cannot expect my children to be vocal about issues and to express their opinions confidently if I can’t visibly show them that I can. So, I wanted to work on my introvert self to become more confident. And I’ve reached a point I never thought I could. I’ve had coverage by @unilad @bbcyorkshire @watchintheknow as well as a few other opportunities that otherwise would be unlikely to have happened had it not been for starting my tiktok.
